Yeah, I overtorqued one of 'em. I was trying to tighten 'em to spec, but I guess my wrench doesn't really go that low and I had enough leverage with that long, stupid thing to pop the head right off. I got one of those extractor kits with both drill bits and matching extractors, but I can't seem to get a pilot hole drilled into the stainless bolt with the bit that was provided. It made an indentation, but that's it.

According to a couple of threads I read, running with 4 springs is more than enough to clamp the pressure plate, so I guess I'm not sidelined with the ST, but I still want to get that bolt out.

Anybody have any smart ideas? Worst case I can just replace the clutch drum, right? Looking at the tangs on the basket they do show some signs of wear, so I was thinking of overhauling the whole thing at the end of the season. Thoughts?

The dealer that did the last service on my ST before I bought it gorrilla'ed all six of those bolts. Probably triple the spec torque. I had to use an easy out (purchased from Lowes) for three that had stripped heads. Luckily, they didn't break off as they made decent drill guides. The smallest easy out in the kit worked well on these bolts.

Even so, I still bunged a couple threads on the hub for two of the bolts. All is well now. I just have to use a bit of pressure against the springs to start those two bolts.

I would suggest getting a good metal drill bit in the size you need. The ones I have are made by Irwin that were available at Costco. Since the bolt head is missing, you might be able to find a drill guide somewhere, which is a bushing on a plate to help traget the tip of the bit and keep the drill from walking off the shank.

Thanks! Yeah, I think a better bit is in order. A drill guide sounds like a good idea, too.

I ended up putting a new hub in when I f*&# mine up, nothing would touch that stainless screw, plus the basket and plates were shot also. $600.00 dollars later I have a bling clutch now :eek:

With a small dremel cutting bit grind a screwdriver slot in the bolt, then heat up the area with a small tourch or heat gun. The aluminum will expand faster and greater than the bolt, try this before drilling.

Thanks for another good idea. I'm not sure I have a dremel bit that will cut into stainless, but it's worth a shot.

If the head is just sheared off , remove the plate , use needle nose pliers or needle nose vise grips and back the rest of the bolt out , some times it'll come out with just your finger tips , if it broke flush , then center punch it with an awl , drill and easy out it .

Paul, I decided not to mess with it last night as I had to catch up on mowing the lawn and such. Maybe tonight.

On a side note (and yes others have already mentioned this) it's amazing how much lighter the clutch pull is with only 4 springs!

Don't be tempted to tap it out like I did, sheered off the pillar. But a 24,000 mile clutch pack was fine with 4 springs.

I would go with the dremel idea first then the drill BUT slowly does it on the drill - go up 1mm at a time

I had the same problem. I used my dremel to notch the bolt and used a flat head screwdriver after I broke the easy out bit trying to turn the bolt. In the end I broke the pillar off. The pillar sheered off at the hub. That bolt felt like it was welded in the hub. Luckily I was replacing the hub with a vee-two hub anyway with my "full monty" set-up.
