HEADS UP - SCAM --> Ducati Paul Smart with 3 miles

2320 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Ashleyf
last week an add came up on Cycletrader for a 2006 Ducati Paul Smart with only 3 miles. Only modification were the full side fairings. The bike was located in Severna Park, Maryland

the seller was replying to emails and text messages and provided requested pictures as well as banking info and a signed bill of sale. It all went south when I asked the seller to show the bike to someone I knew in the area. That person is @StraDuc who reached out and offered to help.

The seller (John Felipe Guerrero) refused to show the bike without at least a 50% payment to the provided account. He also refused PayPal and refused to meet @StraDuc at a branch to collect cash as a deposit.

The listing on Cycletrader was promptly removed when I communicated to the seller I will report the "owner" to the local Police of an attempt of a scam.

Please be aware, I have a feeling this bike will pop-up again or a deal similar to it.

The great part in this all is, that @StraDuc offered to help and I now met another solid Ducati Sport Classic owner and a Ducati enthusiast. Thank you again @StraDuc

to all others, please consider the above and ask for help. you may meet a nice person with a similar hobby :)

Posting a picture of the bike might help. The scammer will probably recycle those images on multiple platforms.

These are pix he supplied NOT the ones from the Cycle trader ad.

I did read that. I wasn't sure if you personally saved any of the pics or info. I do sometimes save seller provided pics and info to pass that information along to the next buyer if I sell the bike in the future.
Here's the for sale ad the pictures StraDuc posted originally came from.

Hello All,
Thank you for the info.
I too, have been in touch with the 'seller'/scammer - Felipe John Guerrero. This thing, indeed, does NOT add up to be a legit offer.
While the CycleTrader ad was listing this 'brand' new bike for $15K, I was easily and quickly able to negotiate the price down to $10K. Right away I was provided with his bank account to transfer funds. Communication - email, text and phone - while being prompt, were confusing, conflicting and at odd hours of night (2 & 3am EST). Since nothing in the bike's records, there is no title only Certificate of Origin, has the seller's name, I requested a copy of his driver's license. He did provide a copy of the license, but it has a different address than the one he mentioned for his bank account address. Having bought multiple bikes across the States successfully, there are simply too many red flags here. These are some of the pics he shared with me. While the bike does look pristine, the landscape is clearly not MD. Further, he mentions that the bike has been kept at his home, but the picture clearly shows it in a storage facility. Upon asking for a video, he wiggled his way out of providing and kept pushing for funds transfer first.
Beware and avoid throwing your money away. It it's too good to be true, it is.

Note that in the palm trees in Maryland pictures the bike has the Pirelli tires we old timers loved so much and in the pics taken in the storage facility (I'd say an airplane hangar. I have a hangar and that looks just like my walls there) it has other (Dunlop?) tires. The guy refused to show me the bike and stopped communicating when I offered to come see it and we could then go to a nearby Chase Bank and I would give him cash. 100% scam. We can only hope he has a very warm end game awaiting him. Soon.

I informed Rare Sport Bikes who also added a reference to this being a scam

The scammer is trying to escalate. I got a text at 2AM this morning from him with an attachment. I did a screen shot then deleted it without opening it but I'm sure he was trying to extract some revenge for spoiling his game by trashing my phone. He's a real piece of work.

Before I bought my bikes, I had the ' joy' of working with 2 scammers. Yeah, I'm slow.
Both in US. Both offering bargain buys, complete with video's.

2 am calls, Freight delivery that was amazing etc etc.
Luckily with bevels, bevelheaven's data on numbers is pretty good.

If it's too good etc. is the mantra
