After having no luck finding a pair of even semi-reasonable gold wheels for my black ST4s, I'm considering powdercoating mine instead. Much less expensive to do than buying new wheels, but how do they hold up if you get a good outfit to do them? I'm not very hard on my bike, so I would hope that they'd stay nice for quite a while? If you've done this and recommend it, what should this operation cost for a quality job?

I had the wheels powdedrcoated on one of my bikes. The finish is bulletproof, and cleans up easily with wd-40 on a rag and an occasional waxing. (The waxing is for my head only--the coater said it not needed). Just make sure that the powder coater knows clearly what areas have to be masked off (all mating surfaces for rotors,etc.) and exactly what color you have chosen. (my wheels were mistakenly painted black). Also bearings, etc. must be removed. The cost is usually around $200-250 per set, more for metallic colors. (That includes the mandatory Long Island Rip-off surcharge.)
It's best to do it at tire replacement time. I took off both my wheels, brought them to the stealership to remove old tires and bearings, then off to the coaters. Three days later I returned to the shop and had new tires and bearings installed.
There's really no negatives.

·As westyed said, it would be bst to have them powdercoated when you replace your tyres (less time and hassle for you). I did it on my Multi (had them in black) abd it cost me 100 euros for both rims. Finish is excellent and so far bulletproof too.westyed said:

I looked at paint chips yesterday...
and the gold sample was a metallic finish. It matched the forks and gold on the disks, but was definitely a metal flake, and I can't decide how that would look on the rims. What do you guys think, too much bling? The color was good, but it would be pretty sparkly in the sun!

·Well if you liked the colour, then there's no "too much bling" 
. After all it's what you personally like and suits your eyes, not what anyone else thinks. I'd say go for it, just don't make it too gold, probably would be better if you coulkd find that "deep" gold colour that usualy the mag rims have (just a suggestion).

First, your bike is never that clean that the bling would show through that much.
Second, just kidding.
Third, maybe someone can photoshop the color of the forks on your wheels so you can see what it may look like.
Fourth, go for it.

·Yes, but keep in mind that the rims (especially the front one) gets dirty very easily from the dust of the front brake pads. So I guess even if they "bling" too much, it will be minimized after a ride.

Is this the color you are looking for? If so I would be more than happy to work a trade with you for your wheels/tires. The color is pretty close...
however, I don't care for the 3 spoke wheels. I like the stockers much better than the 3 spoke, and would love to have a set of the Y configuration 10 spoke wheels. Thanks for asking, I appreciate the thought anyway. I've about decided to go ahead and get mine powdercoated in the metallic gold when my front tire is due for replacement.
