Hell of a way to start the weekend.. was on the fast lane with clear sight ahead of me. The car on the right lane was reaching some traffic so he switches lane with no warning or looking in his mirrors. Hit the brakes but was far too late. I went into his rear left corner and flipped over the bike onto the ground. Luckily I’m ok but my left side of my back is sore.

Exchanged info and got a Whitness’ phone number. Getting it towed to Ace Motorsports for them to asses and my insurance is sending an adjuster there too.

My poor baby.. I think it’s totaled. We’ll see I guess. Any advice will be appreciated. I’m paying a loan on it still so I’m actually hoping it’s totaled so they’ll replace it outright.

Be safe everyone.

Cheers,

Mike

Glad to hear you are ok... the bike is replaceable. It doesn't take much damage for an insurance company to total a bike, I might try to buy it back back with salvage title from the insurance company for cheap if there's no frame or front suspension damage... this would allow you to pay off the loan with enough left over to make the bike pretty again. The side-impact crashes are relatively easy on bikes... clip-ons, mirrors, bodywork, headlight assembly, seat assembly, they all just bolt on. It's the front-end crashes that trash the front forks and usually bend the frame behind the steering tube that make it a lot more expensive to fix. Looks like your tank didn't even get scratched... you are a lucky guy today, most highway crashes don't end as well as yours for m/c riders.

What's most important is that your ok, or seem to be, damage to the bike doesn't look too bad from what I can see. As you rear ended the car are you liable for the car repairs? where I live the collision would be my fault even though the stupid cager pulled out on me. :frown2:

Thanks everyone. I’m not sure if I’m liable or not for the car’s damage. No idea how they handle that in CA. I’m not sure if the frame is bent or not but in this case I’m hoping it is so it will be declared totaled so insurance replaces the whole thing.

Tank did take damage on the left side from the left clip on.

+1 Go get a check up from a spinal specialist just to be sure you’re truly okay while this is all fresh. Don’t sign anything until you do that, not even if it only appears to apply to the bike.

Glad to hear you're okay, I commute that way daily and I know people do not look when they change lanes. It's the last second quick lane changers that catch you off guard. Looks like this is an opportunity to start fresh with the bike. It looks like that will be totaled based on the appearance of damages. Keep us posted.

Sorry about the Bike. Glad you are ok. From the looks of helmet , make sure to get overall physical done special your neck area. Don't decalre all ok quickly. Correct me if i am wrong, but most of the head and nect issues show up after couple of week or so.
Adjusters mostly go with the point of impact. Let us know how the conversations with the adjuster go. I am sure Cager thinks he is right and blames it on you splitting too fast :-(.

Cagers just suck these days. No skills, no concern, no nothing. Just zombies operating dangerous equipment. I expect there to be an attempt on my life me every time I ride. If it's worth it, you may want to look into determining whether or not the cager was texting or talking on the phone. That could change who pays who and how much.

Most importantly, I'm glad you are OK and not really messed up.

Such a bummer... and as everyone has said glad to hear you're ok. Bikes are replaceable. You had it nicely fitted with a lot of aftermarket bits and pieces. I would def try to buy it back if you can, maybe the bike will be repairable or at least you will have some of them bits for your next project.

That sucks pretty hard. At least you did not get too much of a beating.
I had a car change lanes into me while I was in my car. Trying to leave a stoplight.

Sorry to hear about the accident, Mike. Main thing is that it sounds like you are, for the most part, okay. As folks are saying- definitely get yourself checked. Yes, things can show up later. Some good advice about not signing anything too.
Really sucks, but again, glad you are able to write about it. Keep us posted.

Looks like 24 at EB 680? If so, yeah, that's shitty. I've seen tons of near accidents there.....and I don't even go that way very often.

I got merged into on 680 near Gold Hill Road about 18 years ago. Only time I've ever been in an accident on my bike that involved a car.

Glad you're okay. If needed, get an attorney. Don't let the insurance company (yours or theirs) shaft you. There are a couple of them in The City who specialize in motorcycle accidents for the benefit of the rider...........sean

Hi Mike,

I don't know what to say, I know how much love you had put into that bike. What a bummer. I suppose that to look on the bright side, it could have been worse. I hope that you recover ok; let us know how you get on.

As far as California goes if the car merged into you, they should carry all the liability, but insurance people are shady and will do whatever they can to squeeze money out of you.

Also depends on how the cop wrote the report and if they cited the cager with a vehicle code infraction.

Hopefully they cover a new one and you can steal the good bits off the one you got now.

Find a hot tub, you're gonna be sore today as bunch of people have already pointed out.

Wow, glad the you are relatively ok. Suggest that you contact a lawyer ASAP just to get some specifics related to California law. Believe me, I got run off the road and dealing with the insurance companies can be a royal PITA.
