Sorry for yet another tyre thread, tried a search.
Anyway...

I picked up a really nice 748 yesterday. I'm planning on tracking it next week, so quickly getting some needed parts (bodywork, chain, sprocket etc.)
I'm also getting some new tyres. Don't need advice on the brand... no advice needed on the type either...

It's the size i want advice on :p
For a pure track bike with a rider with limited track experience what do you guys is better: going with the normal 180 or going for a smaller 170 size tyre?

I didn't even know they made 170 tires. Wouldn't a more popular size like a 180 be cheaper anyways? I like 180/55 on the ole 999.

180. 190 gives you more contact patch, slow to turn in. 170 gives you less contact patch, falls in much quicker. 180 should be the ideal tire for u. STG over the track weekend was selling Michellin PR set for $235, see if you can get that deal.

98 - 2003 ST2 comes standard with a 170 rear.
