Just finished installing Martin Brickwood collets during a valve adjustment today. When i fired the bike up, noticed some smoke coming from front exhaust manifold flange. At first, thought no biggie, old oil from adjustment burning off. Smoke cont'd and i noticed oil seeping around flange and finally dripping. The bike ran great 2 days ago before doing the adjustment/ collet placement. All shims where withing spec, and closers not too tight. Have any of you guys ever 'injured' a valve seal while doing and ajustment? Can i replace this valve seal without taking the head off? Does the seal just 'pop' off the top of the seat? thanks

sounds worse than just a bad seal.....don't know what could have cused it. I had a seal pop off (and yes they just "snap" on/off) without similar issues. A seal would be the easy fix if it works....

Well, i'll take a look at the seal/ valve tommorrow and see if what the deal is unless i hear more from you guys. Haynes manual/ ducatitech/ web search not showing much..

sounds to me like you have a bad gasket on the valve cover leaking oil onto the exhaust flange.

Well. took valve cover off, and the valve seal looks like it is raised up off bottom of valve stem where it goes into head. Tried to gently push seal back on... no luck and don't want to f$$$ anything up. Any thoughts? How does the seal go on? Thanks guys

try going to this site www.duc.nu and downloading a service manual, which will show you step by step how to replace it correctly...
It is not a big job, BUT you must make sure your piston is at TDC on that cylinder or you are going to drop the valve inside !!

Jas, thanks for the site... great stash of PDF manuals. However, still doesn't answer question. Does the valve seal merely 'sit' on top of what i guess is the top of the valve guide where it enters the rocker arm 'chamber', or does it snap somehow into place? Is this little POS rubber seal all that keeps oil in the rocker arm 'chamber' from leaking down the valve stem into the exhaust port? (which is what is going on in my case) I will have to move the cylinder off TDC to allow the valve to slide down far enough below the closer part of the rocker arm to allow removal of the old seal and placment of new one. It just seems weird that i am encountering this problem, as i cannot find anything about it on this or other forums. Has someone on this board had to replace/rebuild the valve guides, etc and can tell me how this little rubber seal goes on? Thanks to all....

Havnt done them myself before but have talked to people that have..
All i can say is you have to press vary firmly to seat them in place....
Otherwise if they were loose they would follow the valve up and down.
Do a search on ducatimonster.org just had a quick look and they have plenty of info there..

Jas, thanks just did a monster search... looks doable with heads on bike (thank f###### god) according to one guy by just letting valve slide down past rocker arem with small pencil magnet (cool trick) and sliding new seal on. Will give a shot. Jeez, the with the 900i, a simple maintennance task never fails to turn into an extended project.... That why have Triumph Daytona in reserve.

Just to let you guys know... seal replaced with head on bike. Had to push valve stem into guide until flush with top, (turned engine until piston in half TDC) then maneuvered onto top of guide. Luckily was the front exhaust valve, so easily accessed. The old seal was 'baked' and brittle... can believe it had'nt leaked before. So far no more oil leakage.
