Floating rotor carriers - group buy

19090 Views 94 Replies 25 Participants Last post by  jack999s
Right, so there’s been a number of threads and lots of chat about new floating carriers for the ‘90’s cast iron floating brake rotors that were on Superlights, SS/SP’s, 851 SP’s, and a few other bikes. So now it’s time to get this underway.

Let me also state up front here, that I have no interest or association with whoever makes the carriers, or anything else, I just need a new set of carriers for my 851 SP3.

As has been previously stated, new rotors can be made from a 7000 series alloy, which is harder than the original 6000 series alloy carriers. However the manufacturer needs a number of sets ( 13 pairs I believe? ) to make it worth his while. Surely between all the bikes out there with these rotors, and everyone that has expressed interest in the previous threads, we can get 13 solid orders. Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but the talk on one of the other threads was in the region of USD$400 for the pair.

I’m sure someone appropriate will chime in with more accurate info and pricing at some stage.

The manufacturer will need a sample as well, so they can make the new ones as exact copies of the originals. So if no one in the US can lend them one, I will send one of mine from Australia.

So, please don’t whore this thread out with “yeah I want some but they’re too expensive”, “ my discs spin on the carriers but they’re fine”, or “ my $150 Chinese eBay floating rotors are the shiz”, please go to the other threads for that. Please only reply if you are serious about putting your hand up for a pair and have the coin to do it. Please also state how many pairs you want.

I’ll start the ball rolling with 1 pair, shipped to Perth. I’m more than happy to combine shipping with anyone else in Perth who wants some ( Julian, Graham? ).

Maybe I speak for others:

I'm greatful that you guys - Moto / FastBikeGear - have taken this on. Having these made will never make anyone rich.

But for me, and the 900SS/SP these will go on - I have to be careful how much I spend on a bike that is only worth probably $4K max...

That said - I committed to buy one set from Moto at $400.00, and I will honor that if they are produced in some reasonable timeframe.
Good news is that huge job will be finished soon and he can get back to working on our project.

It is a great deal at $400/set.

I can create a post on our website to take small deposits in the meantime. That usually expedites the project since he will see we have orders backed up.

Point me to a link, and I will send a deposit.
I need a set of those at that price.

Thanks

How fast will we need to act? I have an engine rebuild coming up, so that will be a big chunk-o-change, but $400USD is most definitely the right price.
Nick just posted up the entry to accept $200 deposits. If you use a credit card it will pre-authorize for the full amount but we will only charge $200 to you card at the time the order is placed.

Upon completion of the group buy we expect a 30 day lead time to complete the rotor carriers including hard anodize. Your credit card will be charged the remaining balance from the order at time of shipment. You will be notified 24 hours before the card is charged for the remaining balance.

You can only use a credit card to place a deposit. If you would like to use Paypal or place the order manually, please contact us directly at [email protected] or 916.369.2509.

The machinist said he will interrupt his current product production run and start our production if he has 5 order deposits waiting.

Just an update. We have just finished the lathe work on this production run and we will chuck these on the CNC this Friday,... Several sets are presold but we will have spare sets available.
My 5c worth - I have a set of Liams carriers - from his first run - not fitted yet, so I can't say how they fit - but they DO look the part! Nicely made, and the colour is as close to a match as my eyes can tell...

Thanks Steve the colour match is a real challenge as we hard anodise them first. When you hard anodise 7075-T6 alloy (Ergal) it always turns out either black or a dark greenish colour. So we do a first stage process where we first hard anodise them to achieve the 'diamond- hard" wear finish required around the buttons. Then we do a second stage proprietary finishing process to get the gold colour match. I have done around 10,000km on the set I put on my bike and so far no wear is apparent. (From our own and customers experience the original Brembo ones which had a standard 'decorative' gold anodised finish on them typically lasted about 15,000 to 25,000 km.)

Below is a pic showing what our current batch of carriers look like at the moment, after they come off the lathe and before we do the final CNC milling on them.

Just sending the last batch of replica Brembo full floating brake carriers off to the anodisers this morning for the proprietary two step hard anodising/gold colouring process.

This is the last batch of these we will be doing as I think that once the last of these have shipped we should have come pretty close to satisfying world demand.

For those people waiting we should be shipping these out at the end of next week.

I just picked up our last batch of these carriers from the anodisers today. A couple of weeks later than expected but they look great.

Very proud of the finished product.

The color match with un faded originals is fantastic!

Many thanks, just three sets left now.
Thought I'd post my experience with FastBikeGear disc carriers shipped to me in the US from New Zealand. The arrived after about 10 days in shipment, and I found time to install them today.

Basically they are faultless. They fit both the wheels and disks very accurately, and the overall quality of machine work and finish is excellent. Having done similar projects myself (I'm a mechanical engineer) I appreciate that its often more difficult than it seems to produce a high quality machined product. These were not inexpensive but they are excellent. I'm looking forward to reduced or eliminated carrier wear with the harder, hard anodized 7075-T6 material.

My existing carriers were worn at 18,000 mikes, although still safe, but the pins and disks that were reused showed no wear - so the new setup is basically as new.

Incidentally I've used these cast iron disks for most of their life with EBC HH metallic pads, and the friction surfaces are smooth and unworn - the rumors that the HH pads wear cast iron disks rapidly seem untrue. I've used the pads on both cast iron and stainless alloys and they seem to wear cast iron slower, not faster.

Anyway the FastBikeGear carriers are great.

Silvaire many thanks for your very positive and generous feedback, much appreciated!

We have a set from the first run of these we did on our project bike (known locally as the Frankencati) I think we have done about 10,000 on the carriers and so far no wear is detectable, so it looks like they should last much longer then the 20,000km the originals typically last for.

I think we have two sets left from our last run. I don't think we will do another run unless there is a sudden increase in demand. So if any one wants a replica set it might be best to grab them while they are still available.
Well this is a very timely thread for me, as I've just recently picked up my first ducati, a '96 900SS SP with now over 24,000 miles. Of course I totally love this bike. I've wanted one ever since they were intro'd.

At any rate, I'm assuming 6 bolt 10mm offset is what is spec'd on my bike. I did notice that the rotor rattles a bit and have yet to measure what their status is.

If these carriers are replacements for my bike... I'm in!

Yes these are the exact Brembo replica carrier required for your bike. (6 bolt 10mm offset).
