Hi all...
As some of you may remember i rebuilt my 916 in to the white framed corse 916, with the intention of putting a 1198/1098 engine in to it in the near future.
Thread of rebuild.. http://www.ducati.ms/forums/56-superbikes/130347-duke-916-strip-down-re-build.html

Out and about today visiting some local breakers and chatting to a few people along with a bacon sarnie thrown in, i came a across a bloke who has a 998R engine which he may sell me.
The engine is complete with starter etc...
The bloke is looking for at least £1000 for it.
He said he's been holding on to it for a project, but never done anything with it.

Given the amount of work to fit a 1198 engine in the duke (which im prepared to do), What would be needed to get the 998r engine in the 916 frame, extra mods, info ?
Also what sort of performance difference would there be ? (not knowing about the R spec :/ )

Many thanks !

Richard

HI Richard,

I am just about to fit a 998 engine into my 916 race bike :) after having won the Thunderbike Championship with it and now stepping up classes and wanting cheaper easier power. Albeit I am after 130 ponies

The 998r engine is definately worth the £1000 purhcase price - its Duacti exotica

The 998 lump will be easier to fit than a 1198/1098 lump as the frame and engine combo is Ducati standard in 2001/2

Some basic steps to bear in mind.

916 engine mount bolts are 10mm - 998 are 12mm, you will need to open out the frame holes to accomodate.

Source a set of 998 injectors as easier to fit - can be fitted in a high cross bar frame but the injectors brace will need altering - alternatively remove the cross bar and lower it (if you have access to a welder) - or if both are too much work find a 748r frame - no work needed

Desmo injectors will not fit as cyclinder spacing is different between desmo and testa engines

16m ECU & loom can be used but you will have to alter the TPS to use the old style one (their signal is different) and you will also have to ditch the stick coils and go back to old style ones. Alternatively source a 998 loom and ECU but you will then need stick coils and the double fan etc etc (Almost becomes a pure 998)

Use a 998 airbox - no mods necessary Alternatively use a 748r box if you have dropped the cross member (See earlier point)

With the deep sump you will need to source a 998r exhaust to route it correctly or alter your own exhaust via welding to clear the sump (get a 54mm exhaust minimum to take advantage of that engine)

Everything else is as mother nature intended as all the other parts are model cross compatible

Hope that helps, I would just buy the engine at that price to have it for any future project.

Nellie
