So I have just purchased a spare 1198 engine for my track bike ( 996/1098 engine). Is a engine rebuild possible at home. And if so is there a thread anywhere I can follow. I am tempted to try this myself over winter. I have a good amount of tools but probably will need some gauges to dial in the cams in right.

mechanical knowledge, a good manual and a set of tools and you can do anything ya want at home. some of the tools can be costly (like the primary gear puller). I have a shop at home that I do all of my work out of. I am going to tear down an ST4S motor this winter for a track build. installing a 748 transmission, lightening the primary gear and flywheel, degree the cams, set squish...all that good stuff

Yes. They are easy engines to work on. And the XX98 is probably the easiest Ducati 4-valve twin to work on.
