"Cheap" helmets vs mid/top of the range helmets

I am in the market for a new helmet. I currently have a AGV K1. Its been a good helmet and I thought about just getting another K1 or K3. Ive owned the latter as well.

But, I made the mistake of trying on a Shoei X-14 which was far more comfortable and it felt like it was specially made for my head. I also tried on a Scorpion Exo-R1 but it didn't feel nearly as good imo.

Perhaps it isn't fair to compare the AGV K1/K3 line to the X-14 because the retail of the latter is more expensive by at least $500. Now that the X-15 is out, however, the X-14 is on sale for around the $600 mark in some places and i am tempted. I absolutely love the Marquez graphic one but I'm not sure i could wear a Marquez helmet. lol

This has led me to wonder just what is the difference in a good lower end helmet and a mid tier or upper tier helmet? If I did more track days as I would like, I would feel much safer in something like the Shoei. But is this just about comfort, fit, and marketing, and not so much about protection?

Ive been riding for only about 5 years now, so i know some of you guys have far more experience and wisdom.

Well that is unfortunate Vanduc. I had all but decided to go with the K6 based upon what everyone else has said. I dont do much highway riding, but I plan on doing a couple of track days this year on my 998. I assume it wouldn't be too bad at full tuck, but of course, Im not going to ride on the highway like that. lol

Ive noticed that my K1 is quite noisy at highway speeds, but Ive never really noticed lift.
In any good quality helmet line, getting the right shape of helmet for your head will make a big difference in the comfort and wind noise.
I like the Sharp site for comparing protection.

AGV wearer here.

I have been in top of the line AGV (corsa, pista, gp ) for 2 decades now, I keep going back because they are comfortable and work well for what I do with them (track mostly). A few years ago I started road riding again and wanted a communicator in the helmet, I found out these were poor helmets due to the small shell size for speakers.

I had bought my daughter a K6 and it was a great street helmet so I bought one for myself. Riding with a buddy using communicators on the race track I soon found out it was not good for a sport bike tuck due to aerodynamics. I recently sold a K3 to a customer to replace his Kubuto and he is thrilled so far, me looking at construction note it seems we made just a bit heavier then the other higher end helmets.

So far fit and finish of the K6 equals the top of the line helmets and is super ligght but its design shape is upright not racer crouch. My track helmets however have had no issue with aero on any bike just not going to work well with speakers.

I have owned Arais , Bell , Icon and a top of the line Z1. The Z1 rated safe in the Hurt study but was by far the worst quality helmet I have owned. What I notice with good and poor helmets is the quality of the shields ,interior foam (comfort), venting, noise and yes weight. Those things are all important to me and I choose based on them as well as shape/features for the application.

I would not buy a K6 for the track
I would not buy a pista for touring with communicators
both will do the job but are focused in other areas, both are the equal in quality to similar Arai, shoai, etc.
Fit= I actually liked the Icon but I can only wear it for 50 miles at a time due to a hot spot that I do not get with the others.

Thanks for your input Ducvet about the K6. i noticed that AGV recently released the K6s. It has a rear spoiler unlike the original K6. The helmet shape also looks different. I wonder if this is more for sport bike riders/track riders?
For what it’s worth, this time on the positive side, after i sold the K6 I purchased an X-Lite 803 and i can highly recommend this lid, especially at the price, which can be very reasonable depending on where purchased. Everything is fantastic about this lid, especially comfort which is equally as plush as the best Arai i’ve owned. It’s a bit noisy at speed, but then so is every other helmet i’ve ever owned

My bad, you're correct Sir, it has been updated..
I will say I loved everything about the K6 I owned other than how it "handled" at speed. It was almost comically light, like it felt like it couldn't be a proper helmet it was so light ( size medium ). It was comfy, although not quite as plush as my current X-Lite, or an Arai. It flowed air very well. And yes, I loved the graphic, especially with a dark visor on board.

I like the flip lids for being able to breath and let in the cooler air. I've use Neotech, C4, and Sportmodular.
Here's what I've experienced:
Neotech is super quiet, and fits my head well. It is uncomfortable after 2 hours, around my ears (large ears!). Also the chin clasp rubs my neck uncomfortably.

C4 is too round for my head and presses too much on my forehead.

Sportmodular is a full carbon helmet and I purchased it for the safety aspect. Its a great helmet and has been the goto for 2 years. Venting is excellent and it stays acceptable temp in 100*F plus days in Texas.

One thing I noticed though is carbon helmets are LOUD. The Neotech is more comfy INITALLY for me and quieter.
The Sportmodular is all day comfortable, but not as quiet.

I purchased the AGV Tourmodular and have been extremely pleased. I feel it has the initial all day comfort of the sport modular, with the quietness of the Neotech. Also, it has the 4mm thickness face shield and the locking face shield center clasp which I prefer. This allows me to "vent" the shield in a cracked open position for airflow but not bugs.

No worries. Every review of the K6 Ive read or watched mentions how light it is. Pretty incredible.

Also, thanks for the recommendation of the Elite 803. I had looked at the Nolan version before. I will give it some consideration.

What really sold me on the X-Lite was how comfy it is. I'd never even given the brand a thought until a local retailer brought them in and I tried one on just out or idle curiosity without intention to buy one. I was shocked at how plush and comfy it is. Like I said, at least on par with an Arai, which I had reluctantly swore to never wear again due to their "special" visor mechanism.
Anyway, here was a helmet that was as plush and comfy as the Arai, and after about 8000 miles of use last year, I can say it performs on par with Arai ( either Quantum or Corsair is what I've owned ) in every other aspect, but it's substantially cheaper! Win, win, win, imo

Vanduc996, you are selling me on the X-Lite. Some of the graphics are cool too. The Chaz Davies replica is cool and there are other ones. More importantly, I dont know of any way to try one on. The only retailer around here is Cycle Gear and their selection is...limited.

Yeah, that’s annoying…
It’s the kind of thing you can’t really chance, proper fit for your head, i mean.
In the helmet brands i’ve worn ( Arai, AGV, Shuberth, X Lite ) i’m always a medium and the X Lite medium for my head was perfect. Really snug without a hint of a pressure point. Probably doesn’t help, but just sayin’..

Having had two bad crashes in Shoeis, I can say.. they aren't good enough. In fact, no helmet is good enough though they are pretty amazing and totally pricelessly valuable. If these things (helmets) didn't exist and I didn't spend a lot to get one, I'd be dead right now. Since my head would have been crushed and I'd be dead, I'd say those Shoei helmets were worth.... many millions of dollars. Any degree of added safety in a helmet for any number of dollars they ask for is a bargain.

Not all helmets that cost more are safer though. That's where price matters... are they worth paying hundreds more for features, comfort, etc... probably not. But it's pretty hard to design and make a helmet that provides good protection under a certain price. I'd say trust in the company that will make a really safe helmet is really worth it. Companies that pride themselves on their safety like shoei and arai are absolutely worth whatever you have to pay. A company that values cool graphics, flipping visor gimmicks, etc... not worth a penny. I wouldn't buy a helmet that didn't pass ECE and/or SNELL, but also wouldn't treat all that pass these certifications the same. Some companies will game the tests and design a helmet just to withstand the specifics of the test and others pass the tests because they put huge effort into making a helmet that protects in real situations so of course it would pass these tests.

I recently paid more than my standard Shoeis to get an Arai as I decided they are more safety obsessed. Maybe I'm a sucker, but I'd literally pay anything to not get brain damage/die.

I've blown 4 Shoei helmets apart doing asphalt density & abrasion testing.

I'm still here supposedly brain damage free?

Depends on what your head is worth ---I wear Only Arai helmets, Just purchased a Corsair X to replace my RX7RR . --I have been in 4 crashes-( all 4 caused by an idiot in a car) --in all 4 had I not been wearing a helmet or had I been wearing a cheap one I would be dead, --I wear the best helmet money can purchase--I dont care about the price--I value my head & what is inside it far more the money.
Purchase the best helmet you can afford.
While anecdotal data like this has some value, it’s far less valuable than empirical data. In the absence of empirically validated evidence correlating clinical outcomes (i.e. injury severity) and helmet cost, we have no idea (unfortunately) whether or not the two are even related.

Anyone remember the “Blowing the Lid Off” article from the mid 2000’s? Motorcyclist magazine iirc.

I'm with rennsportmotorrad - Arai Corsair X.
We have 4 of them. Please forgive the Honda helmet; there is an RC51 in the stable.

Thanks guys for the responses. As I said in an earlier post, I tried on the Shoei X-14 and loved the fit. I managed to find one for sale close to where the in laws live and my mother in law picked it for me. It was an absolute whale of a deal. The only problem is I’ve got to cover up the blasted ktm logos! Fortunately my wife is skilled with vinyl so it shouldn’t be too difficult

Those were my criteria. I narrowed it down to the AGV K6 and the Scorpion EXO ST-1400 Carbon. Went with the latter due to cost and very happy. Although still sometimes wish I got the K6…
