The manual recommends taking the battery out of the bike before charging. If I want to trickle charge at 2amps, is it necessary to disconnect the battery?

I connected my battery tender to my battery over the winter. Didn't disconnect the battery. Just installed the "pig tail" and hooked it up. No problems.

My bike lives on a Battery Tender when not running. I don't remove the battery. I'm not sure about a standard trickle charger. Unless it is a "smart" charger like the Tender that shifts to a float or stand by mode, I'd concerned about over charging the battery. I've not heard of any damage from connecting a charger with the battery still in the bike though.

This plugs in to the power outlet under the left side of your seat (assuming your riding an ST) and will trickle charge your battery. I've used it for the past three years. Maintaining battery charge couldn't be easier with this adapter.

Use a battery tender that plugs into the accessory outlet. This is even how the dealerships do it-- you think they remove the fairings every 3 weeks?

I think they are referring to the initial charge. Low amp charging is fine on bike.

The same situation for me since many years on manu mikes. Never seen something like blown rectifiers (that is what they're afraid of).
