So I just got my GT this year and am loving it so far...so much so that I hardly ride my BMW any more.

My bike is the grey paint scheme, and for the most part it is a nice color. I am debating though on having it painted the Ducati Red this winter. I have always loved that color and it just seems that having a red Ducati makes sense to me.

I know that some people see changing colors as almost a sin on bikes, what are your thoughts? Any pros or cons that you can think of in having it painted? Any recommendations on where to get an exact Ducati Red?

Thanks.

It is YOUR bike...

Do as you wish! Having my Ducati red was/is important to me when I bought my GT 1000. To me it is part of the experience of being owned by a Ducati. Maybe my second, third, or fourth Ducati will be some other color.

Look in the Owners Manual. It gives the exact PPG paint code for the Ducati Anniversary Red (the official name).

I had a red sport classic Biposto, and I regret changing it from bright red to dark silver grey. It looked much more sophisticated in silver grey, but I miss the strong confident red - however... on reflection it wasn't really the red I wanted to change, it was the shade of red, as I found the OEM paint too bright. (It always looked fake in photos, so I used to desaturate it)

...like this:

If I was to do it all again I'd paint the bike a slightly darker red. Still like a Ducati but stronger and more blood red... I think there's too much orange in the Ducati paint, plus a metallic finish would make it look much better than the flat gloss they use.

Just my 2p.

Also, Ducatis are not all the same red. Just visit a dealer with a range of bikes across 15 years or so...

Paint it. First, it's your bike, and to be honest, people aren't so precious about modding the gt as they are about the rest in the line. It's pretty much common knowledge that most think they look better altered a bit. I must say I love that grey color though. I personally think it fits the styling to a tee.

Thanks everyone for the opinions and information.

I am going to have to put some more thought into this and make a decision come fall. The winters are long up here so I will have a lot of time to contemplate and have it done...the only good thing about living in a cold climate is lots of time for modifications in the winter.

Keep the shiny side up.

Swap...

Red was a popular GT color. If you are not in a hurry, I would check around for a used set of red panels/tank - it may not be as expensive as you think and you could keep the originals for when you got tired of red!

Look for dreaded expanded tank, but you may even see if the dealer would swap the tank under warranty - a cheap way to get a spare?

colors

Hi all....the 07 GT Grey/green ( Pewter?) color is kind of rare. and really compliments the silver and black and chrome on the rest of the bike...I receive many compliments on the bike now that I've cafe'd it Its very unique now...The Ducati red is sporty but common ....Good luck

In thinking about it now I guess I should have mentioned this before. I have gone the "touring" route with my GT...Leather panniers, rear rack with top case, touring bar kit, and will be doing whatever else I can to make it the "ultimate" classic touring bike. Don't get me wrong though I do love the cafe style GT's on here, just that I already have my cool looking "fast" baby in the garage....see pic. With this one I wanted style and comfort.

So, I guess that does make a difference in appearance when it comes to colors...The grey may just suit the "touring" style slightly better than red.

Dammit...such a simple decision seems so difficult.

I can understand a person thinking that the 2007 grey/green GT1000 is just too blah. I have to admit I was a bit taken aback when I first took delivery of my pre-ordered one back on `06.

Now, after 6 years of ownership I find I really, really like it. What changed for me?

When I first went Ducati mad, back in the mid-sixties, Ducatis were pretty staid paint-wise. Metallic blues and greys mostly. But by the time I actually got my first Ducati (A `93 900SS which I still own) red was to me the only color for the bike. (Well, those yellow Superlights were kind'a nice too!) Red meant speed. Red meant pizzazz. Red meant days on the track trouncing buzzing fours in the tight stuff.

So I guess what changed was... me. Now what I love about Ducatis is less those things than the soul-satisfying sound and feel along with the just-think-it-and-the-bike-will-do-it handling.

I like the fact that my GT1000 doesn't look fast. I even like the fact that it doesn't appear to be trying to impress anyone. It just goes like the wind, taking me along with it.

I love opening my garage and seeing it appearing oh, so laid back, and then hitting the starter and feel it come to life. "Who me?" it seems to whisper. I can almost see it wink.

Maybe, then, its that I'm 65, totally satisfied with what life has brought me, and thus running no where and out to impress no one. No one but the wind. And myself. And the grey/green livery does that just fine. :)

I preferred the Grey or Black GT, but they were a little rarer to find when I was looking (a little over a year ago).
Once I get a new tank and seal it, I plan on painting my current red GT. To each their own I suppose.
