It's not the carbon that wears out but usually the packing used on the inside to reduce noise. The L or V-Twin put out huge bursts of air(exhaust) which can really destroy a muffler from the inside out!
With CF the issue is heat-several years ago companies that produced CF exhaust usually prefaced in their warranty that if the carbon turned dull or lighter in color, etc it would not be covered by the warranty. One specific bike, the ZX 12R Kawi had suffered from CF issues due to the tremendous heat the motor put out. Todays CF and associated resins are far superior too those made just few years ago. Actually CF still suffers from ultraviolet rays (sun). Keep your CF out of the sun for prolonged periods to keep it from dulling.

Hmm, thanks for the info. How often would you say one should re-pack their carbon exhaust? Or does that vary quite a bit?
