keeping up with traditions of this forum, here's is my little misadventure of the day:

I crashed on my way home from work today. I man pulled out of a parking lot of a strip mall onto oncoming traffic (me) with little concern for motorcycles and their direct relation to the law of gravity. The guy literally pull out right in front of me after being paused long enough for me to see him there for at least 200 yards. I had no choice, I had to lay her down, otherwise I was going to crash into the guy's SUV, sending me either flying or smashing my body on his car... So down I went, and my baby went and lodged itself right under his driver door.

Damage:

the bike: both clip-ons snapped onto the tank, preventing the bike from steering at all so the good news is the frame seems 100% intact. The tank suffered some hard scratches but I have a new one coming under warranty (and the dealer confirmed the damage wouldn't affect anything). front fender and seat cowl got scratched, left pipe is toast, and everything attached to the handlebars disintegrated (rizoma tanks, grips, master cylinders, levers, mirrors... the rod on my ohlins damper is slightly bent... my favorite shop, West Coast GP cycles, was there within 15 minutes to pick up the bike and will test the structural integrity of the wheels, forks, triple clamp, and frame tomorrow so I'll know for sure, but it didn't seem too bad compared to what the crash felt like.

me: I landed on my shoulder. Thankfully I was wearing some gear, so nothing broken or dislocated, but separated muscles around my shoulder blade and collar bone. I'm super soar and swollen and pretty incapacitated of the left arm. I was wearing jeans so my knee took a hit. Bloody but OK.

Helmet is damaged, jacket is damaged, and even my brand new 17" macbook pro took a big cosmetic hit... (although it works fine)

The good news: The car right behind Mr. oblivious was an LAPD black and white. So my witnesses are a pair of cops, they saw the whole thing and wrote the report. The vehicle to the left of me as I went down was an ambulance from the fire dept. So they checked me out right away, wanted to take me to the hospital but I declined, going to see my doctor tomorrow... (i have some pain meds now...).
I'm not sure what the case is in other states, but in California, if a car pulls into oncoming traffic, regardless of any other factor, they are at fault. The cops judged that I was going to the speed limit, which I was, so no argument there. And since my bike hit and cause some damaged to the car on the driver's door, there is clear indication that he cut me off. (not to mention the witnesses... ). So the good news is that I'll most likely get the man's insurance to cover damages and medical... but I'm sure it will be $$$$$. The man was in his 70s and very apologetic and thankful that he didn't kill me... what can you say, accidents happen.

Thankfully I'm ok. But I won't hide that I'm in a lot of pain, and I almost cried when I saw my baby on the ground, hurt. I know I got lucky and compared to John, I did walk it off... so I can;t really complain.

Sorry for the long rant... it helps to get this out.

Can't wait for 2009 to be over.

cheers!

D.

BUMMER.
At least you are ok, (going to hospital would of been a good idea).

There was some luck.........the police right there.
That should ease the way through insurance etc.

Hope you're back on the road quickly.

Thanks for the support, I appreciate it.

the bad part is I'm looking at an 11 hour plane ride tomorrow, and flying in this much pain is really going to blow.

I declined going to the hospital because I could walk fine and had someone pick me up, and they said it was up to me, that they didn't feel like they HAD to take me. My doc tomorrow will do x-rays and the whole nine.

as for the bike, yeah, as long as they don't total it, I'm happy, I'll have some fresh new gear on there... it will be OK.

I guess until the verdict hits I'll be stressed out, and then after that it's just a matter of waiting for the parts... ;)

anyway, thanks again!

cheers,
D.

Glad to know you were surrounded by everyone (but a hot nurse), really quite lucky to say the least! You will probably discover that your injuries are more than you thought once you see your doctor, as is usually the case with those of us who like to be real men and just shake it off like you did. Your attitude about the whole thing is admirable, hopefully everything turns out well for you.

I'm really sorry for your bad luck at experiencing this, but really glad for your good luck at having a police car witness it. At least you are in one piece; the bike can be fixed or replaced, you can't. These accident reports on here scare me. A few weeks ago a famous footballer was seriously injured near me when a driver performed an illegal 'u' turn in front of his BMW. Drivers just do not look properly, they are in so much of a hurry that bikes do not figure on ther radar.

Yeah, how ironic: horrible luck to have the guy pull out, but incredibly good luck to have the police witness it all.

Glad to hear you're ok.

Lucky guy you are… good to hear that it is mainly material damage!

Please let your arm check by a specialist… a similar accident of a friend caused two torn tendons and a disrupted muscle!

They saw it when doing a CT…

All the best for you!

such bad news:eek:- but at least you're ok. try to look on the upside.:D
you and the bike will mend soon enough, and the weather musn't be so great over there now??

i had similar accident some years ago on my gsxr, but i ended up over the bonnet, and the bike under the car.
luckily i had full leathers etc and just ended up extremely sore... i was in a daze for days afterwards though, quite a surreal experience...

Glad you are still around to tell the tale. Hope both you & your bike are restored to normal order asap. Take it easy over the festive season & let's also hope those witnesses result in an early settlement from the other person's insurance.

It's good to hear that you weren't too badly injured.

Wow, if you have to get into an accident, you couldn't ask for better circumstances (cops behind you and ambulance nearby).

let's hope 2000 is the last of your pain and you're back in biz quickly.

Glad Your OK

Just a little reminder that sh*t can happen anytime on these things, most of it out of our control. Hope You heal soon, and Your bike will be better this time around, as You will most likely have some time to pick your parts. Hang in there. Jim

Dood, that sucks. !!!

Best wishes to heal up fast and heal up well. Glad you don't have broken bones, broken head or worse. Thank goodness for gear and good reactions. You would have t-boned the car with your brain if you hadn't been paying attention.

Take care of yourself and get well fast!

Sam
