I'm about to have a full custom exhaust made, and am wondering if it is worth having stepped headers made?

I have been searching the web, but not finding a definitive answer.

If anyone has experience with stepped headers on our bikes, I'd appreciate hearing what the advantages / disadvantages are of such a system.

Thanks

Hi Rob,

thanks for your PM, how come you know i have
stepped headers on my bike* ? ;)

i was just too lazy to answer, hence it required
some google research, to come up with pictures
of the books i suggest you to read.

the answer to your PM is in your thread, so others
may benefit from it too.
i believe that stepped headers are a great way to
optimize the power output of our engines, it is
a shame, that doug's arc fabrication web-site is out
of business, as he had wonderful systems pictured
there with impressive dyno results to boot.
a correct develloped system will not just increase
hp and torque numbers , but will broaden your
engines's power and torque curves too.

anyway, since there are no 2valve ducati tuning
books at hand that i know of, i recommend the
following harley davidson tuning books,
as they keep all the information ( and much more )
that you are searching for:

these are not cheap but well worth the investment,
i consider these books my bibles.

i am jesus.

*they are not properly develloped yet, but the
diameters are not too far away i think.
the guy who made it has a 2 in 2 system with
identical diameters on his SS 1000 DS which
works very well.
it would take some research and dyno work to
come up with proper results i think.

Thanks Muschi.

Before posting my question, I did a search on the forum, and your bike came up:

http://www.ducati.ms/forums/showthread.php?t=54249

I'll see how I go with the information that you have provided, and will speak with the guy doing the exhaust about his experience, and what he can do.

Unfortunately, my expenses don't run to building multiple headers, testing and dyno runs :(

Thanks once again.

i could repeat the data of my exhaust, as they
already have been mentioned in Wasps topic,
and could provide you with the formulars etc
of these books, maybe late this evening.

cheers.

Thanks Muschi. I looked through the WASP thread and found the details you provided on your system.

It is amazing that doing a search on the entire ducati.ms forum only finds a few references to stepped headers, and you and WASP are the only ones who are doing their own work with them.

The only other reference is to an Arrows system that has stepped headers, but no details.

there is a guy in the supersport section, who has
a arc fabrication 2 in 1 undertail on his SS 800
race bike, and he claims it to be the difference to
the other 800 cc bikes in his class.

check out doug's arc fabrication web-site, it is from
the web archive though, dated Feb.04 / 2008,
he was mr. stepped header ducati exhaust.

http://web.archive.org/web/20080204221608/http://www.arcfabrication.com/

i will take the bike to the dyno, and will either
alter the exhaust or have another one made if
this one should not function at all.
it is not calculated by the formulars from above
mentioned books, and would have looked some-
what different then.

cheers.

Thanks PS1K, definitely interested in measurements and pictures.

The Arrows system that was referenced in the search I did was not for a Sports Classic, so the system you have may not be stepped.

my beautiful 2in1 stepped header system is for sale now, including
the EC road legal Akra titanium hex can, see the classified thread:

http://www.ducati.ms/forums/showthread.php?t=69568

or some pictures of the system in the build thread:

http://www.ducati.ms/forums/showthread.php?t=54249&highlight=stepped+header

system is beautifully made and has no scratch,
with lambda plugs welded in, perfect fitment and
fabrication, will fit sport classics with minor alter-
ation to the connection pipe.
for sale at 600 Euros all in, don't ask what i paid
for that.

i'm thinking of making a pair stepped headers myself for my termi 2-1 system in the future.
what should be the best inside diameter for them?
i was thinking to start with 40 or 41 ID at the head.

can i expect a power increase over the termi 2-1?

the header pieces that fit into the heads are lathed on my system,
beautifully made, with the brackets being laser cut.

i strongly recommend to buy my system, as it is as great as it gets.

Bumping this thread hoping someone can jump in.

I'm looking at going from 2-2 Termi exhaust on my GT1000 to 2-1 system, which basicly means I have to make my own header.

Have anyone done this, and made some measurements from a performance perspective?

I would be very grateful for any input.

Someone here bolted on stock '06 mono headers with Termi slipons to his GT without problems. He also speculated the Arrow 2>1 full system looked like it would bolt on.

That was me:)

Looks like the Arrow would fit with ALOT more clearance around the swingarm, but, indeed, they both work. You would need to mount the hanger bracket in the second hole behind the shock OR make your own custom hanger/mount.
