Any Mainers around?

790 Views 12 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  britcoal
I'm new to Maine (and the U.S.) in fact, and just moved to Portland. I picked up a 95 900SS/CR yesterday, it's my 2nd Ducati.

Any Mainers or New Hampshirers around? Or anyone else keen to go for weekend rides...

Welcome to the States. I'm near the Southern end of Lake Winnepasaukee in New Hampshire. Only about 1.5 hours out of Portland, ME. There are some good roads up here. You might want to check out the Maine European Motorcyclist site at http://www.eurobikemaine.org/. They have a good meet in Sunday River each year.

Well, that was fast Chris. You barely made it out of my yard and you're on Ducati.Ms? Down here we don't call you guys Mainers. It's more like maniacs. :)

Ah yes, the New England state nicknames. We learned those when we moved up here from Atlanta a few years back:
Maine: Maniacs
New Hampshire: Hampsters (Hamsters)
Vermont: Vermints (Varmints)
Massachusetts: Ma**holes
Connecticut: Connectic*nts
Rhoe Island: Rodents

I've lived in New England for almost 30 years, I have never heard those nicknames except for Massholes. I just used that one the other day (out of state driver)!

Except for Mainiacs and M**assholes, they're new to me, as well. But, I have a feeling any are better than what the native New Englanders would call those of us originally from NJ. (I have a feeling it's not "Garden Staters.")

Number 9...

Fancy meeting you here...You bought a Duc? Nice choice, I think the mid 90's 900SS are one of my favorite looking bike's of all time...

Ditto what Copperhead said, check out the MEME site...Great group of guys, they do a breakfast in Augusta once a month, there's a BBQ in April, the MEME meet in Bethel in July, a trip to Owl's head, etc...I rode with this group pretty often the end of last year when I bought my Duc...We'll either have to get together for that beer, or go for a ride on a nice day...I'm itching to get my ST3 out!!

I've been busy so I haven't had a chance to call you, I was rearended in my truck, the ONE day I decide to leave on time, since I have been working late, so I've been fighting with that guys isurance to fix my truck the way I want...My Grandmother's been sick and she just passed away...I'll be in touch soon...I don't think there are too many Mainer's here...

Later,
Chris AKA Tiller Ayuh on the NESR board
About 80 miles north of you.
And we are called Maniacs and the reason will be come clear after one summer here as will the Ma**holes though that term generally applies to any out of state "cage" driver except those from New Hampster or Vermont.
Maine has some great rides but the roads themseleves leave much to be desired. Some decent roads can be found around the Sunday River/Bethel area and Rangely. Sunday River Brewpub is a favorite lunch spot for many riders. Also Bar Harbor area but summer traffic is a killer for most coastal area rides. NH-VT have some great rides and most of their roads are in really good shape. Along with the potholes watch out for deer, moose and wild turkeys there are frequent "companions" on many rides.

Yeah, Ma**hole and Maniac are the two most popular. I don't think the others are used as often. I primarily hear them from my wifes co-workers, who are mostly Mass transplants. Maybe they got tired of being the only ones with a nickname.

As smegtheprez said, there are some beautifull roads up here, the potholes and frost heaves can be a bitch though.
copperhead: Thanks for the info, I'd heard of the Maine European guys so I'll have to look them up... plus I hear people from Vermont do bad things to sheep? :(

bruce19: Hey! I'm surprised you took time off your busy P.I. schedule to bother replying... :D I've actually had problems starting the bike, I think it's the battery? Go over to the Supersport section of the forums & you'll see my post...

Desmo Duc: Yah, I couldn't hack paying >$1k/year for insurance on anything Japanese (other than a XR650R), so I got a 900SS from Connecticut (bruce19's friend actually). No problems about the call, I've been busy as a two-legged ass myself. I'm living down on Congress now, give me a holler when you're free and we'll go out for a beer! I have Gore-Tex gear so I don't mind a cold weather ride... if my battery is still alive :p
Cool...Will do...I don't think I've ever been this crazy...I hear ya about keeping the Duc battery charged in the cold...I never had an issue with the TLR...Oh well...I think I talked the mrs into letting me get some exhaust...It is a crime keeping stock exhaust on this thing...She nixed the open clutch cover though...Oh well, I'll take it a year at a time...I'll be in touch...

I am a Masshole,I repeat a Masshole, That said, but I am up in Portland at least 2-3 times a month, There is some outstanding riding up theya. Let Me know, i just got my 30th bike, and my first Duke a 2000 750ss, I am anxious to see if Terblanche will cripple me also.
Displaced Mainer!

I'm a Mainer/Mainiac and was in Portland (Eastern Prom) from '01 - '04 but got stupid and went back to Montreal for more pain (grad school).. NEVERTHELESS I will return at the end of August and certainly looking forward to it. You guys will have to enjoy this summer for me, though. Congrats on the purchase.
