I’m on the Northern California coast and looking to do the Lost Coast Road again. This is a notoriously geologically unstable region, and the roads are mostly paved and very choppy. We rode it a few years back on my Moto Guzzi, and it was pretty brutal. Of course the MS has much more sophisticated suspension, what I’m really needing in this situation is lots of compliance. I’ve not had a chance to play with Enduro mode, but as this is paved road, likely to be wet, and I have a passenger, maybe Urban mode? What would be the advantages and disadvantages to Enduro mode? Thanks!

Advantages of Enduro mode are softest (most compliant) settings to help with the bumps. Disadvantages are I think traction control and ABS are turned off, and especially with a passenger I'd worry that the bike would feel wallow-y riding on pavement. Also Enduro mode is the most power-limited, I want to say it limits you to 100hp. I would choose touring over urban mode, as urban assumes smooth city streets as far as suspension goes, and also limits power. Whatever setting you choose, I think preload still needs to be set up appropriate for the weight of your load, i.e. it'll be a different setting, particularly the rear, if you're carrying a lot of gear and/or a passenger. You can all the different modes when you get there and pick the one you like the best.

Thanks, I’m thinking of sticking with Touring mode to see how it goes. Definitely don’t want any surprises wrt braking or traction. HP is irrelevant.

Touring Mode is still 150hp(same as sport) but w/gentler throttle delivery. When you scroll through the modes on dash it will tell you settings for ABS, TC and HP.

Handling. There will be more nose dive under braking and more squat when accelerating. How much will those affect your riding? While 2up? Who knows? Try them and report back.

I've done the Lost Coast and well, I promised myself I'lld never do it again.

The best part (post card beach) is actually pretty close to ferndale off the 211. The rest is hillbilly backwoods.

I did Lost Coast Road on my Guzzi a few years back, it was well and truly brutal on that bike.

We did the north section of the road this time. With 35 mph winds, it was fun for a while but really annoying in the long run. Enduro mode ended up being the most fun, the bike felt more agile and less punishing. You do lose DTC and maybe rear ABS, fortunately not wet so that wasn’t an issue. Also long sections had washed out and were sand/gravel, didn’t want to push my luck with the wife on board.

Obviously, you can customize all the mode settings. When you start tweaking the mode settings you will get a lot more out of the bike. I generally use touring mode but setup “rider”, “rider+ luggage”, “rider and passenger” and “rider + passenger + luggage” sub menus differently for different road conditions although I seldom carry a passenger or luggage. There is a small twisty “deformed” back road loaded with potholes I ride on all the time, not quite as bad as lost coast. I would recommend starting with Touring mode, add about 3 turns of front preload (on top of the forks), set rear preload between 20 & 24, “harder” on the front, “softest” on the rear, DTC 3, DWC 1 (you can lift the front if needed) , ABS 2 and engine on medium for a start.
