Draining it from the bottom is your best bet will help to get it in your pan better, i pulled my oil cooler after draining the filter and oil pan and still got some squirting out. Un-hook the engine side of the lines first that way you can point it into your drank pan, than you can swing the bottom of the cooler up and get most of the oil out that was minimizing your mess and saving that new oil.
