It's probably running WAY lean instead of what you think it is running as rich. Popping and backfiring during decelleration is usually due to a Lean condition. Running lean will produce a much higher temperature in the combustion chamber, requiring the cooling system to work harder to keep the engine in it's optimal operating heat range. Try PM'ing Section8, and asking them if they can get you the correct chip for this application.

Thats interesting, I thought it was running rich because of the smell of raw fuel coming off it.

I definitely recommend getting a Power Commander III. It will probably fix most of your problems (including the overheating).

I was debating between the power commander or the ecu and opted for the ecu because of cost and it seemed like the logical step. I was hoping that the ecu would have solved some issue alone. I was told that the power commander will only regulate the fuel and not the rev limiter and ignition.

My 02 998 runs about 180 on the road, however, if i am in town and it is warm 80-90 degrees, it is nothing for it to go up to 210-220, and once back on the road it goes down to 180

When I had the stock exhaust and chip I had no temp reading above 180 so it throws me off abit. All else is the same air temp can't be a factor it hasn't been anything close to warm around here. I hafd the sytock exhaust during late summer last year. Thanks for the input Allen

No worries, all is normal. The 998 fan comes on at 214F. Just ride it and yes, as soon as you get moving the temp will plummet.

Its reassuring to hear that but it doesn't seem to settle at a temp. It seems to just keep going. I worry about letting it sit above that 220 mark. I mean it got so hot yesterday while sitting at a light that I could briefly smell something burning. I quickly got going and parked it in the garage and logged on to querry you guys. I haven't touched it since. Bubbazenetty suggesting that its running lean is ringing in my ears.

I was always concerned with the temps. on my bike. Also a 998.
When I checked the operating temp with a Fluke brand meter my brother in law uses for HVAC work it read 15 degree F cooler than the bikes gauge. The fans are controlled by a different temp sensor than the one for the gauge and come on when they are supposed to. I have never had a problem with overheating. During the warm months I run watter wetter which also helps and is required by my track day org. Hope this helps. Ken.
