I have a problem with the temp at idle.

A little backround first. I added a 50mm arrow half system which was for a 996 so I had no ecu. The bike seemed to run rich after adding the exhaust. So I searched e-bay and was able to buy a new DP chip frrom a ducati dealer for a 45mm exhaust. I also removed the air restrictors at the time. Now the bike reaches temps aproaching 210 at stop lights and during warm ups, It may even get hotter if I left it sitting. Once I get going it quickly comes down to the half way point (180). Prior to added the chip and removing the restrictors all seemed fine with the exception of it running rich. Oh ya the bike still runs rich and the exhaust still girgles on deceleration. Also it sounds like its bogging a low rpms in first. It didn't have these issues before.

Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks

It's probably running WAY lean instead of what you think it is running as rich. Popping and backfiring during decelleration is usually due to a Lean condition. Running lean will produce a much higher temperature in the combustion chamber, requiring the cooling system to work harder to keep the engine in it's optimal operating heat range. Try PM'ing Section8, and asking them if they can get you the correct chip for this application.

Thats interesting, I thought it was running rich because of the smell of raw fuel coming off it.

I definitely recommend getting a Power Commander III. It will probably fix most of your problems (including the overheating).

I was debating between the power commander or the ecu and opted for the ecu because of cost and it seemed like the logical step. I was hoping that the ecu would have solved some issue alone. I was told that the power commander will only regulate the fuel and not the rev limiter and ignition.

Temp gauge may be reading high.

I was always concerned with the temps. on my bike. Also a 998.
When I checked the operating temp with a Fluke brand meter my brother in law uses for HVAC work it read 15 degree F cooler than the bikes gauge. The fans are controlled by a different temp sensor than the one for the gauge and come on when they are supposed to. I have never had a problem with overheating. During the warm months I run watter wetter which also helps and is required by my track day org. Hope this helps. Ken.

My 02 998 runs about 180 on the road, however, if i am in town and it is warm 80-90 degrees, it is nothing for it to go up to 210-220, and once back on the road it goes down to 180....have asked several other 998 owner and this seems to be there temp to run at. I am termi half system and chip. I just had all the openers closer and belts redone, and water wetter and the same temps as before. My st4 runs about 160 or so on the road, at first I was concerned about the 210-220, and now I a confident this is normal.

Hope this helps

When I had the stock exhaust and chip I had no temp reading above 180 so it throws me off abit. All else is the same air temp can't be a factor it hasn't been anything close to warm around here. I hafd the sytock exhaust during late summer last year. Thanks for the input Allen

No worries, all is normal. The 998 fan comes on at 214F. Just ride it and yes, as soon as you get moving the temp will plummet.
Its reassuring to hear that but it doesn't seem to settle at a temp. It seems to just keep going. I worry about letting it sit above that 220 mark. I mean it got so hot yesterday while sitting at a light that I could briefly smell something burning. I quickly got going and parked it in the garage and logged on to querry you guys. I haven't touched it since. Bubbazenetty suggesting that its running lean is ringing in my ears.

You can wire a manual switch or replace the existing factory switch with something that turns on earlier.

These are available for the 748-996 and the 998.

It all seemed normal (never above 180) until I changed exhaust and the ecu. Thanks Ken
