There's are really simple adjustment on the 916 998 in the linkage.

Simply tighten or loosen the linkage. Done.

To answer your earlier question, all gears should shift in and out easily and smoothly. Not as smooth and assured as a Honda, but smoothly and confidently none the less.

I've had my 916 where it's hard to get into second. After adjusting that linkage rod to the shifter, it was perfect.
