Hi everyone,

I have an opportunity to purchase a 1999 Ducati 996SPS with 5,000Km on the bike with a lot accessories (Slipper Clutch, New Radial Mount Forks & 4 Pot Gold series Brembo, Dymag Carbon wheels, Evolution Front Faring, & list goes on and on...etc) as can partially be seen on the pictures.

As bikes prices varies by country to country, my best analogy is that the seller is asking the price equivalent to a used 2006 Ducati Paul Smart.

1.) What do you guys think re the deal (Pice about right, too high, too low)

2.) I want to have 1 bike of the Tamburini design...not sure this is a good choice or I should hold off for a 998S, or 998R?

3.) Any particular concern over this 996SPS, anything to watch out?, etc...

Please excuse my ignorance & any perceived silly question this may seem to be...I'm totally torn & cant decide whether to proceed or not & would like your inputs as a sounding board.

Best,
Kris

The seat is pretty ugly and the front fairing is an abomination, but those are easily fixed. If it's a legit SPS (lots of fakes out there), then it just comes down to price. Go for it.

Yups its a legit SPS, (Checked the VIN as well)

1.) Only thing is most stock items are long gone, re front faring would it be fair to say its basically standard 996? (To find a replacement i mean)

2.) What would theses bikes retail in your respected countries?

Thanks again for the help!

Yes, front fairing is the same as the regular model.

Mostly $10k-11k in nice shape.

Qoute that, its just not possible to translate until youve tried one, I remember so very well first time I drove mine and heard the whisteling that occurs at 5,5k, is that music or what! Hard induction sound combined with that whisteling...
That was coming from a 748, I still have the films when I shit my pants flogging the sps :D

And the mental feeling, rolled on and my body moved backwards in the seat, priceless, a new drug...where do I sign? (obviously into the evergrasping italian godess duh!)

To mention BMC they used to have a writeup (was taken away 2006 or so) about a spiced up sps, whish I saved the text but it was very well written and the writer said the hit at 6k was like being hit by a snow shuffel, very describing :) Maybe its just funny to me as Im used to a snow shuffel :) Its a good smack I tell you!

Go for it, I love mine. If you are buying it to ride, leave as is, but if you are getting it as a possible lower depreciation item, try to find original parts. Most of the bodywork is common, original wheels might be a bit more difficult. Or you can do what I have done, find as much RS stuff as you can, get the engine up to 145, and have fun. Its savage.

In France, a 996SPS is between 9000 and 12000 euros.
This bike is a good deal : Ohlins FG43 with radial bottom (1999 996SPS has Showa), Dymag wheels, STM etc ...

The front fairing is part of the Carbon dream Evoluzione kit : very hard to find it ! but you can find a stock front fairing.

Many thanks Dominique!

Seller was telling me this is a rare front nose from Evolution something....now that i got your info that its the same carbon dream that did the MH900E it all makes sense now....many thanks again!

Many thanks everyone for your kind inputs.......

Will certainly update if I can agree on a reasonable price with the seller...this would certainly be a good pair with my 999R Xerox.

996SPS (1999) Yes or No
Absolutely yes, it looks like a great bike and they're only getting harder to find in good condition, although I'd swap the seat and front fairing.

BTW those 'Carbon Dream' body kits are quite rare so if, like me, you don't like the nose then it should easily raise enough cash to get a stock fairing and seat.

While the Front nose maybe rare , it does not increase the value of the bike I would argue it actually reduces it , but as mentioned before sell it to help purchase an OEM.

yes : Carbon dream did also a kit for MHE900.
The complete kit for the 998 is fairings, seat, tank, front fairing etc ...

I'd prefer a 996SPS "original" with red fairing.

Many thanks Dominique!

That Evolution is just hideous. Of all the bikes to revamp the cosmetics for. Why choose arguably the best looking bike of all time? It's like a karaoke singer trying to cover Freddie Mercury.

I hope you buy that bike so we can keep up with it and get some pics with a stock seat. That is one of my dream bikes.
