I have the oppurtunity to choose between either.
One is 2001 996s
SPS motor (euro model)
Power commander, cams dialed in etc
service history
Lots of bling
Fantastic condition
43000km
BAD=needs new speedo (cracked glass) and would replace the top tyriple clamp as someone has drilled a couple iof holes in it.

2005 999s
Absolutely immaculate with spare set of xerox fairings.
BAD= needs service and belts which I would do myself.
Has been written off cosmetically and has new speedo. Full report on damage and photos of repair. 30000km with 13000 since the accident.

AND BOTH FOR THE SAME AMOUNT OF CASH!!

I think the 996 would retain its cool factor down the line but the 999 would be easier to live with.

What say you guys

I'm curious what it was about the 999 that made you choose it over the 996.
The one time I rode a 999 I wasn't impressed at all.
i wasn't impressed with my 999s after the first ride either. thought i made a huge, expensive mistake! a week later and learned to not ride it like the 996, and was blown away at how great the motorcycle is! needless to say, after six years, the 996 doesn't get as many miles as the 999 does...

Fair enough, I readily admit that a 40 mile ride isn't enough to fully judge a motorcycle. Especially considering I had nearly 40 000 miles in the saddle of my 996.
I'm sure if I rode an R version next time my impressions would be much more positive....:D

it's like saying do you want an F40 or an F50??

F50 is a bit faster and a bit more user friendly.
F40 has classic hardcore ferrari looks and that crazy twin turbo engine, but less comfortable, less refined.

both are fucking awesome. for me I like the F40 (and the 996) but doesn't make the other option a lesser option. just different.
