Hi I'm new here but figured I could seek some advise from some people who know more than me:

I just picked up a decent condition, non-running 996 for only $1500. I was not told what was wrong with the bike but figured at that price, who cares. I'm a long time monster owner so I am at least familiar with Ducati "quirks". After messing with the bike and only getting it to run on one cylinder, I noticed I could see the spark through the throttle body...not good. Turns out the timing belt pulley snapped off and the rear head is a total mess. I sent it off to my mechanic who just called me with a quote of $2100 in parts alone. So now I have to decide what I want to do, should I repair this engine, replace it with another 996 engine or swap with a newer 999-1198 motor? Used 996 motors seem to be basically non-existent which makes that route difficult. I am willing to take on a fairly involved project but am not really a master mechanic. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Jack

Figure out what you want it for first.

1. fun project resto-mod
2. always wanted a 996
3. going to flip it
4. you have no idea but it was cheap.
5. track bike

we could redo that list as:

1. well, it was fun, but it cost way more than i thought.
2. could have bought a real nice one for what this shitter ended up costing me.
3. i can't believe how much i'm going to lose on this fucking money pit.
4. my wife is going to kill me if she ever finds out how much i've spent / just have to get this fucking thing finished.
5. why didn't i just buy an r6.

Rebuttal

1. as adults we already know that we already know that we stop thinking when it comes to motorcycles.
2. but then the fun of building/saving/ screwing it up wouldn't be there
3.Yes but everyone that knows you does.
4. And that's why you have friends with a garage to hide the bike in and receive packages at. If you are lucky she will just assume you are sleeping around.
5. because no one wants a junk R6 with a blown motor and yet there is always someone who DOES want a Ducati with one.

I think my answer is 1, 2 and 4. Always wanted a 996/8 and couldn't pass this one at that price. And as fun a putting a more powerful modern engine seems, I just know in the back of my head, if I get started on the retro-fit of the engine I am gonna run into a million little problems that are a pain in the ass and the thing is gonna sit in my garage next to my other projects that don't ever get touched and I will never ride it. So it looks like I might have some luck thanks to the forum, and hopefully found some cheaper parts. Fingers crossed.
