I lost all gears above 1st. The shifter pedal feels light/limp with little/no resistance. Clicking down to 1st and it will drive in 1st gear, but the drivetrain is clearly not connected in any other positions. Clutch handle seems to feel and operate normally.

For the last 4k miles the bike would occasionally (very rarely) go into 'N' with a loose rattling sound (a couple of bits of metal rattling around somewhere) when shifting to 4th or 5th. Ok thats a bit misleading because I would have been between higher gears and not actually in true neutral. Today before the breakage that started happening a lot.

I'm lucky it happened close to home and not on the highway 30 seconds prior.

I'd bring it into your local ducati dealer, have them pull off the cover and check to see if the return spring isn't jammed. If thats no the issue, you could have something wrong with the transmission selector, which is a known issue.

Sorry to hear that.

Return springs do cause problems, I've seen it on one of my 748 motors, yet shifter cam and forks are also quite possible the reason for this kind of problem, which by your explanation might be the problem.
Open her up!! Sh*t does happen.....
