Discussion Starter #1
I'm going to be rebuilding my old 916SPS engine/bike that's been stored in boxes for the last 10 yrs since I last raced it after the engine blew (rod let go ... lotsa damage) to be used as my road and occasional trackday bike.

When I was racing it I gave up on the starter motor setup and used starting rollers instead because the starter clutch system crapped out due to the sprag bearing and races it 'grabs' on becoming damaged from trying to start the higher comp race engine. IMO it was/is a poxy system anyway.

Now I want to reinstate the system and my question is has anyone had success in building up the sprag bearing race surfaces and remachining.

My guess is the surface of the races would need to be not to hard or soft to cope with the action of the oval bearings locking on.

I haven't priced new hubs but I'm assuming they cost the moon.

Has anyone had experience on this issue ??

Why not put second hand parts in? I have retrofitted a combination of 999 and 748 gears into my SPS to change the starter ratio and it works OK with a high comp motor.
