Oem with stock pistons all run 87 because I cannot get 86.

Any with higher compression than stock pistons start at 91 octane and then I start lowering the octane after the motor is broken in and I can know the motor. by then i will start experimenting with the next lower octane in an attempt to finnd the lowest octane the bike will tolerate without detonation. If you do not have good hearing or understand what this sounds like safe is always found with the higher octane.

Each bike build can have different points where you get detonation so there is no right octane any more than there is right jetting. The bike will let you know when you are done if you want to look for the answers. Too low an octane can have bad consequences so tread lightly as you learn but the benefit of finding what works best is you are maximizing what you have just like degreeing cams, jetting,blueprinting.
