Looking at a 748, planning on some heavy modification. Lots of anodizing, CF, etc. My main questions are:
1. Can I use 848 forks in a 748 triple, or do I need a modified triple? I want the radial brakes

2. Can I use stock 848 rims on a 748? Obviously if I'm switching out the front end, the front wheel will be fine and March's website says that their rear rims for 748s and 848s are the same measurement.

3. How would you propose putting a 848 tail on a 748? I was told the subframes will not interchange and am worried about rigging the tail to the 748 subframe. Hopefully this last idea is not too blasphemous for the diehards.

Of course I considering just jumping for the 848, especially because by the time all is said and done, I plan to spend the same amount on a 748. But I figured I would rather have a really custom 748 than a stock, dime a dozen 848. Thoughts and suggestions greatly appreciated.

I take it you are a new to Ducati?

Why are you picking the 748 as a starting point? if its a cost issue I think you are setting yourself up for failure on your 848/ 748 hybrid.

Its not a fact that 748s are more prone to flaky rockers, it should be tho.

Instead of a "dime a dozen" 848 with better maintenance intervals, more power, and an improved chassis you'll have a ""dime a dozen" 748 with unremarkable suspension, and no speedometer.

There are options to get radial brakes without having to do a front end swap. I could even CAD up some fork bottoms if you arent in a rush, it will be less than the front end swap. Not cheap tho :)

Sounds uninspired IMHO.

I picked the 748 because I don't want a liter bike. That leaves 748 749 and 848. I don't want a 749 for the same reasons that it lasted all of......3 years? The headlights are ugly and it's not equiped with a single sided swingarm. I want a bike that looks all my own and I won't hesitate to tear apart and modify. For the price of just the 848, I can buy a 748 and everything else to go with it, and the 748 already comes with a dry clutch. Plus I wouldn't be as inclined to tinker with an 848. Even if I did get an 848, then why not just get a 1098?

Mostly I'm just curious about wheel fitament as it seems like it would be a lot more hassle and money for the radials with little benefit. Anyone know if stock 848 rims will work on a 748?

1. If you use the 848 forks, you will need a 848 front axle and 15mm offset rotors.

2. You can then use the 848 wheels and 848 rotors on the front. Rear is a direct bolt on.

3. 848 Tail will require subframe mods.

Thank you. The front 848 wheel will not work with 748 forks?

With an 848 front end, the stock rotors ARE 15mm offset, correct?

848 wheel on 748 forks would fit- but you will need a 10mm 5 bolt rotor. Only one I know of is the BREMBO "Narrow Band Corse" Front Rotor: 749/999. or you can make a 5mm spacer for the calipers.

You won't have a speedo pick up anymore. You'll need a MD SBK Speedometer Spacer: 748-998 to fill in for the speedo pick-up.

848 rotors are 15mm offset. 748 forks are 10mm offset unless you put on some different fork bottoms: MW Billet "Ohlins 100mm" Radial Lowers: 749/999/996R/998R - but then you will need radial calipers.

I used 999R Ohlins and 1098 brakes with 848 wheels. I am using the stock 748 axle. The info given is correct about the offsets of the rotors. Hope this helps.
