Last night we were looking at changing the belts on a 749s and noticed (or didn't notice) the usual timing marks on the case and heads. The doubley weird thing is that going through the complete cycle the marks on the pulleys never seemed to line up in a logical way. Does anyone have the service manual or access to one that can shed some light on this? The assumption was to line them up with the top of the head but that proved futile as well or this thing is totally wacked which I don't think is the case.

You have to make your own marks the first time.

Lt's manual goes into this. The mark on the layshaft and case still denotes TDC on the horizontal cyl. With that lined up you mark the cam pulleys (I used a center punch) some use paint. Make a mark on the pulley that lines up with where the valve cover mates with the head. Once you've marked all them you can remove the belts. Hope this helps Ken.
