I must popped out the little silver sensor getting the FP out. Does that little sensor at the end of the wires just float around in the tank or does it go in the that black slender plastic piece

The sensor does snap into the black piece . According to your photo , the sensor is upside down . Flip it right side up with green wire down . There are two slots on the black piece and the sensor snaps into that piece. Does this answer your question?
