I would need to replace top of the air box since some one had broke air duct bolt in to it and it really bugs me. Obviously one needs to remove fairings and tank (I wish that the old thread still had pics from that operation!) but do I need to remove the air box completely from the bike or is it possible to remove just the top and leave the bottom part in the bike?

It is possible to remove only the top, leaving the bottom attached to the intakes. Undo all the screws that hold the top and bottom together. There are more than you'd expect. I had to remove the who ignition assembly where the key goes, and then use a very long very skinny screwdriver to get at the front screw. To get it completely off, I believe you have to disconnect the throttle and cold start cables, as those are routed through the top of the airbox with a little rubber grommet.
