Discussion Starter #1
:(Hi,
Can someone help me out. I have a 2001 748,one day it seemed like the battery wouldn't turn the starter over enough to start it. I was able to push start it, so i figured it was the battery. Replaced the battery and it wouldn't turn over the starter again. I read some blogs on this site, that maybe it's the solenoid. So i bypassed the starter solenoid and it would turn it over a little stronger than before but not enough to start the bike. So i tapped the starter motor with a wrench, it didn't really work.

1. If i remove the starter motor is it wet inside or is it dry?
2. Are these symptoms of a bad starter motor?
3. Any other suggestions on what to test for?

Thanks,

Hi,

Did you already find my blog through the search?

See here --> http://myducati.blogsome.com/2007/09/ start from the bottom.

Check the bolt (and it's isolation) that goes through the starter housing.

The starter itself is dry inside, but to fully remove it, you'd have to remove the left side cranck case cover.

You can remove the starter housing and leave the other parts in the engine, but it's a bit of pain in the a$$ to get it back. It can be done, though. If you only remove the cover, be careful with the part that stays on the engine - pull it out too much, oil will begin to leak to the starter side.
