So I know the stock pipes on my '02 748 are 45mm but is there a way to get a 54mm slip-on to work?

If you tune the bike you may need a larger pipe but I doubt you'd ever need a 54mm on a 748...

BUT as said above.. It´ll cost you power and torque (IE: Less power, not more). I´d sell them and buy 45mm slipons instead. //amullo
