29mm Oberon Clutch slave (y/n?)

Motowheels offers a 29mm Oberon clutch slave cylinder. I have a 1996 900SS/CR that's "down" having the carbs serviced and some other stuffs being done including changing out the 23 year old hydraulic lines to stainless braided ones (either Galfer or Speigler, I haven't decided just yet).

While the clutch system is disassembled, I figured now is as good a time as any to replace the 23 year old clutch slave. Motowheels offers the Oberon slave cylinder with a "bleeder tool" (bleed hose assy) and a half litre of Motul Racing Brake Fluid. With the Military/LEO vet discount the whole pile comes to $156 w/free shipping ($173 w/o discount).

Good?
Bad?
Squid stuff?
Worried about nothing?

I'm almost done bugging you good folk here. Once some of the parts come in, and I replace the belts, and the bike is running I'll become much more quiet 'round here. You've all been a big help so far, and I deeply appreciate it.

Thanks, Brian (Rex).

I prefer Speigler lines, -I am a dealer for both Speigler & Galfer, For me it's more about delivery times-Speigler I get in 3 days after the order is placed---Galfer I normally have to wait about 10 days. For me it's all about how quick I can get them for my customer or the job I need them for. If you are West coast U.S. you may be able to get the Galfer lines in a few days --But I cant in Florida
Sometimes Galfer has them ready to go, ordering direct from them, sometimes they gotta go in the back and make one.

On my Oberon I had to reuse my bleeder from the OEM, a mildly annoying omission in my opinion, but the quality is high on the cylinder itself. Be sure to measure your existing rod to see if you need to add the additional extension. (probably not on a '96)

You can ask all the questions you want here. All I ask is you do so in the right sections, ie; not in the midst of another topic.

That's what these forums are for. :)

The '96 SS/CR has the coffin style clutch master cylinder, I believe it's a 12mm piston. The Oberon slave is a 29mm, and might be too large for your master cylinder. Depending on your clutch stack height you may find that the clutch drags slightly with the lever pulled all the way in making neutral nearly impossible to shift into with the bike running, and making all your shifting feel notchy and incorrect.

I know this because I went through all the same steps on my '94 CR. Somewhere around 2-3 times a year I wind up re-posting the attached chart that I took from elsewhere on this forum, though I can never remember which thread it was in. It may be outdated as far as slave manufacturers are concerned, but the math is timeless. I share it so that others may learn from my mistakes.

I eventually resolved the problem by updating to a 1098 clutch master cylinder.

Brake lines are generally about brand loyalty more than anything. I used Galfer because that's what I could find cheap with shipping via Priority Mail on eBay. These days I opt for Venhill lines - you order a line length and the banjo ends separately. Make the line of your dreams by attaching the banjos on the master/slave, then attach the line to the banjos without any line flex/orientation issues.

I've already seen (and saved to my hard drive) that chart you've posted. I found it yesterday in some other posting while I was attempting to do some research on this very topic of the Oberon 29mm slave.

I'm aware that I may have to change the master to accommodate the 29mm Oberon, but I had no idea which Ducati master was correct. Thanks to your posting above, I now know which one! So 1098 it is! (~~begins search on eBay~~)

Re; hydaulic lines ... I think Spiegler will also make lines to order. At least they used to. In any case, the information you've provided is deeply helpful ... to me and anyone else looking into this same subject. You're a legend, man!

T'anks.
Spiegler will make you any line you want-they ask length and what ends you want--any angle fitting and basically any color line and different color fittings. I always order my lines in their vintage black with silver fittings--that way the lines always look oem in color at least, but thats what makes my customers happy. Spiegler always has to make up a set for me -but if I call them before noon e.s.t. they normally make them & ship that same day.and I have them within 2 or 3 days at the latest. and for me time is money

Anything pre-2001 will need the extension.....sean

The 916/996 unit will work also. I have the Oberon on my 996 right now with the stock master. It's fine, no issues at all. I have not tried the Oberon with a coffin master but my project 900SS came with an after market slave cylinder installed.

I don't know what size or brand it is, and have yet to find anyone who can tell me based on the logo and the name "Hammer" on the outside face of it. There were no issues with it pre-disassembly though.....right now, all the hydraulics are completely disassembled on my work bench. Clutch system included.......sean

I don't know how it compares (piston size) to the coffin master, but I have an Oberon slave on my SL, which has the original master (with the small round remote reservoir) - and it works just fine.

That is encouraging! Thanks lots for the input.
