I have a high milage 996 (25,000 + miles) and want to do my own oil change. I live out in california so bike doesnt see many rides that go below -60F. you guys think a fully senthetic 20w50 would be better choice than what the manual suggests?

Yes. Ducati's use engine oil to lubricate the transmission. The shear forces between transmission gears break the long-chain oil molecules into shorter ones which quickly reduces the oil's viscosity. Starting with a higher viscosity 50W gives you a margin of safety against oil film breakdown. Full synthetic oil only.
