Bike stalled on the freeway going 80 when I pulled the clutch in to fold in a bar end mirror. Refused to restart until I was going about 20 with my hazards on (this was during 5pm CA 405 traffic mind you) really lucky the dude behind me realized what was going on and was a blocker car for me.

This is legitimately something that could get someone killed. I am going to call my dealer Tuesday and see if they will come pick up the bike. Hopefully they don't give me the run around since it's used and I didn't buy it from them.

That is exactly what mine would do. If you pulled in the clutch at anything except very low rpms the revs would drop and the bike would just stall. It only got progressively worse. There is some alleged "goo" that is causing the throttle bottles to stick. Of course, when I got my bike back the idle was higher as well. Honestly, I think that was the main issue.

Yeah I noticed when I pulled in the clutch the bike would drop revs so low it wouldn't show on the tach and either bounce back or the bike would 'blip' the throttle to get the revs back up.

My local Ducati dealer was nice enough to pick up the bike with my crazy work schedule and hopefully they will get into it tomorrow or Friday. They sounded fairly confident they could get it fixed quickly.

I just hope this is a one and done fix and not something that keeps going back and forth to the dealer over. I love every aspect of the bike except the stalling

Mine did the exact same thing. Some times it would catch itself and you would hear a little blip. Other times it would just stall. The idle is now higher. I honestly think that this is the true fix, however, they said something about an anti-corrosive substance that was put on the bike.

Curious as to why Ducati would make the idle so low to even let this happen. Seems unique to the production models as well as no reviewers reported it. I bet once they had to get it all approved for emissions requirements they tried to lower the idle as much as possible and took it too far

To keep people updated the bike is still at the shop they are not hoping they will get it back to my Tuesday of next week (though I doubt they actually will). My dealer has been great in this process even though they have quite a few bikes in for service hence the delay.

They performed the battery recall on the bike and did a full update of the software but my bikes still had issues starting, idling, and riding. The techs then decided to plug in a demo unit they have to the computer to look at the running parameters to see what the difference between my bike and the demo was, there were none. They then went on to check the MAF sensor and made sure it was not cracked or damaged in any way. The issue still persisted so they were going to check plugs and some other things and that was the last update I heard from them as of yesterday.

Spoke to them today and they mentioned they still had a few things to check and then wanted to test ride it but it was unclear if the bike was still running horribly or if they got it fixed and just wanted to be doubly sure before returning it to me.

All and all very annoying that this appears to be a ghost we are chasing but my dealer has been great about it and they have luckily been able to replicate all of the issues I have had with the bike. They seem committed to fixing it right the first time. My old Ducati dealer would have just done the recalls then gave the bike back and said "we see nothing wrong with it yours is just different" so I am very happy I am not in that situation.

I will keep everyone updated once I get the bike back and know more about the culprit.

Your dealer really needs to talk to the Ducati reps. You can mention my name, Paul Norris, as Ducati learned a lot from my case. I would say it is worth a shot, as clearly Ducati has information about what they did to my bike, and you are having the exact same problems. Good luck.

Got the bike back yesterday and rode it for the first time today. Happy to report the issue appears to be resolved.

No issues starting even in cold foggy weather parked outside over night.

Riding it the idle no longer drops below the tach, it occasionally goes a bit low but it is 90/95% better than before, certainly no holding my breath pulling in the clutch.

I was a bit concerned because it didn't seem like we ever found the cause of the problem. The work done to the bike was according to the work order

Battery recall
Software update to ecu
Checking all ecu parameters against demo model (all parameters were very close but the bike was still rough idling)
Check MAF sensors and spark plugs (no issues found)
Replacement of air filter due to some kind of white substance on the original

Whichever of these was the issue appears to be fixed now. Interesting to note that my idle doesn't appear to be higher like others here reported, just more stable.

Strange issue but hopefully this is the end of it.

Now to figure out how to fix the condensation on the inside of my ducabike clutch cover. Previous owner had it installed at a dealer and the issue didn't happen until I got it back from the dealer, though I can't blame the dealer for condensation.

I will post an update in about two weeks to let everyone know how the bike is doing, I hope the stalling won't come back like some cases here have

I hope they fixed it, as they worked on mine twice and the first time it seemed fine for me too. Then, it reared its ugly head after a good long ride. That substance must be the anti-corrosive that Ducati told me dealer to remove from the throttle bodies.

Did my first proper long ride today trying everything in my power to recreate the stalling conditions and it seems great. I don't recall the on off throttle being so sticky though, maybe that is just me forgetting. If the clutch is out and I am splitting traffic sometimes it feels like I need to open the throttle about 10% before the bike actually does anything, this is only from coasting at idle. I figure this is probably due to Euro 5 emissions on the closed loop more than the previous issue

Experiencing the same (I think) thing on my new (to me) 950 (~10k miles).

Sequence :
Cold start, bike will shut off after a couple of seconds.
Restart is very difficult (this is where the video picks up)
Any throttle input before the bike is warm makes the bike die.
Generally after nursing it for a few minutes it'll get going, but then occasionally randomly die at intersections. I've had a couple of close calls now and have pretty much lost confidence in the bike...

I was going to take it into the dealer this morning, and after shooting the attached video I got geared up to leave, when the bike died halfway up my steep driveway, at which point I dropped the bike and broke the shift lever ???sigh.

Hi guys, I have been dealing with the same stalling issue with my hyper 950. On cold start it struggles to stay running, on downshifts the engine stalls as soon as the clutch is pulled in, with very slight throttle input the idle drops to a stall and lastly having issues restarting after a stall.

I bought new and have had the problem since day one. I thought maybe it’s just part of the break in process until I was left stranded in a blind turn on a mountain road with a bike that wouldn’t restart. At this point I have had enough and took it back to the dealer.

I was told that it couldn’t be reproduced but they reprogrammed the ECU and they sent me on my way. (Once again, it stalls out on an off ramp as I’m heading home from the dealer?)

It took me a few weeks to get it back to the dealer due to my work schedule, but when I did, it remained there for multiple weeks.
After contacting Ducati multiple times for help (who refuses to respond to me directly) The dealer informed me that the problem was my charcoal canister getting filled with fuel and that was caused by “overfilling the tank or popping too many wheelies”

I got pretty pissed as I had done neither & experienced this since I rode off the lot. (lesson learned, I should have turned around immediately)
I declined the costly customer paid replacement of the charcoal canister at this time due to having very little confidence in it actually being the cause of the issue

I’m contemplating the next step, I am trying really hard to like this bike but I have lost all confidence in it. In total it’s spent about 8 weeks in the service department for this & I’m at about 2k miles currently.

Pretty disappointed with this whole experience TBH....

As a new prospective Ducati buyer this thread has been quite an education. I was curious whether these stall issues all occurred on the HyperMotard or they cut across different models?

Has anyone experience these issues on the 2019 Multistrada 950S, which is the one I am considering.

Thanks in advance.

The stalling issue appears across different models, including Monsters and Multistradas due to the bikes sharing the same Testastretta 11 degree motor. Most of them seem to run ok, but a few in this thread (and myself) drew the short straw.

It's just the nature of the beast and part of the Italian "character". Roll the dice and you might get one as reliable as your Super Tenere (former owner myself), or you might not. I'm curious if simply raising the idle speed is enough to keep it from stalling. Having a good Ducati dealership nearby is helpful if you're worried about reliability.

I do have a Ducati dealership within 30 min, so that box is checked, how good they are time will tell.

InnerNerd - any thoughts on the riding and ownership experience of both the S10 and a Ducati.

Hey guys, I am having the same problems with my new Hypermotard 950 SP (660 miles as of today). I bought the bike new from Ducati of Austin and I think I had about 4 stalls from 0 miles to the 600 mile service which was last week. I mentioned to the service writer that the bike had stalled a few times while slowing and pulling in the clutch. Of course I get the dealer response of "first I've heard of it". The ride home from the dealer was good, no problems with stalling.

So I get the bike out today and go for a ride, except the bike is a bitch to start, as it keeps stalling. Stalling in my driveway/street while trying to warm it up and then multiple attempts to restart. Outside air temp was probably 68 degrees, sunny skies. It takes me about 15 minutes to finally get going, and the bike is really hard to start. Finally, I get going, and the bike seemed to run ok during my ride, with no stalls that I recall. I am currently running 93 octane gas, but it has ethanol in it.

I'm going to try another ride tomorrow and see what happens. My previous Ducati was a 2016 Hypermotard 939 (purchased new), and I never had any issues with stalling. It ran really sweet in fact. I guess if this problem persists I will have to send this link to the mechanics at Ducati of Austin and hope for the best. I have never wheelied the bike, and in fact the service guy told me to get out and wring it out. The tank has never been overfilled either.

I've had a number of bike (25+) in my many years of riding, and never had an issue like this with a new, fuel injected bike. I guess I will search out non-ethanol gas and see if that helps.

Thanks, I'll keep the thread updated.

I'm pretty close to buying a 950 hypermotard and this thread is helpful.
I'm thinking of trading in my 1290 super Duke but with these stalling issues I'm not sure it's the right move to make.

Anyone mind telling me what they paid otd for a base model?

I don't have stalling issues but my throttle is just like you describe and it drives me a bit nuts. I think the bike is very lean off idle a it seems to get better as it warms up......

The bike does seem to idle too low on mine as well. I get the occasional start into a too low idle then a stall within 30 seconds, and only once while riding and pulling in the clutch. Not chronic.
Had my bike in the shop to take care of the battery lead recall, update the computer for the tire calibration failures, and deal with the low idle hard to start issues.

All is fixed now. Starts right up, idles faster, no stalling.

My service dept said ducati is aware of the hard start/stall issues and it is fixable. If you have it, talk to your dealer and get it fixed.
