Hi All,

New here with a new to me Ducati ST2 2002, lovely looking bike. lowish kms.

Just picked up a used one, which has a couple issues, and I intend to try to do most of the work myself, as I can't really afford a ducati specialist.

First up, the guy had it sitting for a couple months and just started it occasionally. He filled the tank with old fuel from a spare before I took it. ( premium fuel). There had been some flooding of the spark plugs, possibly from a leak at the fuel tank? Still need to work out where that comes from, but when tank lifted it leaks at the back / cover

Anyway, when i leave with the bike, the bike feels as powerful as a scooter. Really, absolutely pathetic. Long story short, due to the fuel loss ( about 2x quicker than it should be because of the leak) I fill the tank a few times with premium fuel and the bike does start to run a little better, more like perhaps a 250 rather than a 50cc scooter. But really, nothing like a 944cc ducati should feel like. I rode 700 kms home, it coped fine, not overheating, all good, other than the fuel disappearing quickly (leak) and the really weak power. It would feel fine cruising at 100 kmph, but i wouldn't even dream of drag racing a car at the lights or overtaking.

Any ideas if there is a common issue which causes just total anaemic power, and no other symptoms? I managed to get up to 120kmph in aero position, but it was like i was on a 125cc trail bike and screaming it to get there... ?

Any advice, help, suggestions appreciated. thanks.

UPDATE: This morning i have looked and i think the previous had totally overfilled the oil, and i looks like it is leaking whilst in use from a couple of areas. Would this cause absolutely awful power and double the rate at which fuel is burned? I am struggling to decide which way to go - head back to the seller and complain, or just try to fix myself?

i'd try to get your money back. sounds like a really bad buy from a dickhead.

if not, then start going through it. get it on a diagnostic tool and see if all the inputs are valid. if they are, move on to the tank and see what's bad in there. old fuel makes a real mess of the stuff inside tanks these days.

Well - great news! I took it to my Ducati man, who had a quick look, swapped a spark plug and bingo! --- It was only firing one cylinder, hence the poor power and fuel economy, and me not having ridden one before didn't have a yardstick to compare it against. Now it is firing on two cylinders it feels as it should and sounds a lot better. Need to sort out the speedo / odo, drain some oil ( the seller had filled to totally full above widow) and clean it all as oil was coming out the breather. But thanks for the replies and advice, really appreciate a place like this with helpful folk. Cheers all, have beer on me!

700 km on ONE cylinder has to be some kind of notable record. However, I admit I have no clue what kind of record it should be, nor where it should be noted.
