2001 900SS Clutch Questions Clutch Pack Replacement

Hi, I have a 2001 900SS. I notice some issues with clutch recently and decided to remove the pack and clean it all out. All went well and no problems with how to do that. But I have some question re my clutch basket and pack. I have attached some photos. I notice that my clutch basket does not look like the original, so I assume it has been changed over at some point in its life. As you can see in the photos, my clutch basket has a screw hole at the top/end of each basket finger. A thin ring attached to that with 12 small screws into the basket fingers. As you can seen in one of my photos, I am holding that ring and it is broken. Only realise when I did this process today. So I need a new ring. I also want to replace the clutch set as you can see they are in terrible condition. My initial question is how do I get a new ring that is broken. I am unable to find what brand this clutch basket is to buy a new ring. If I can't find the brand or a new ring do I need to replace the basket? Also, can I fit any brand clutch set into this basket regardless of what brand that basket is? Thanks in advance for all your help.

That is not a oem basket, or clutch pack. Your bike came with a steel basket and organic clutch plate material. Your inner hub does appear stock.

old vee two baskets were like that. that ring is annoy af when you have to pull all those little screws and the heads are chewed. pitfa. it's to stop the fingers separating. the oem aluminium baskets have the steel band around the outside.

you could run it for a while without ring and see if the fingers move around.

looks like one of those shitty sintered bronze surflex packs. steel pack in aluminium basket makes a mess over time. you can put any pack in it.

is there anything actually wrong with how it functions, or do you just not like the look of it?

Thanks belter. I appreciate your help and pointing me in the right direction here!

Now I have more questions for you.......😆.

Firstly, no it's not that I don't like the look of it all. The pressure plate hides it all so I don't mind at all! I have noticed that when taking off from a stop it has a grind noise and is not smooth. After cleaning it all out and blowing the dust etc it is much better but still not great. I am putting it down to the clutch pack that I have. On inspection it is all very worn and built up with rust etc. So I was thinking of just changing out the clutch pack.

I don't think there is any problems with my basket - apart from the broken ring. Unfortunately it appears I can't purchase the ring anymore but I will do a bit more research into that.

Will the vee two basket be aluminium?
If I keep this basket what type/brand should I go for for a plate set?
Does the plate set then need to be a particular metal to not cause that mess you are referring too?
Or should I just change out he plates and basket at the same time and keep everything else the way it is?

Cheers

Here´s the Vee Two catalogue, speak to them if you wanna fix the clutch you have.
Otherwise yep, it's prolly best to change to new basket & plates at least

To eliminate the chatter on take off you could try the white lithium grease on the clutch plate fix. Do a search on this forum or the internet. It sounds counter intuitive to grease clutch plates, but it worked for me.

doesn't look that worn to me. i'd beadblast or aggressively scuff the steel plates and take the shine off the frictions and try it again.

Hi everyone. Thanks very much for all your help. I really appreciate it. It is indeed a vee two basket. I ended up talking with them on the phone here in Australia. They had a look at mine for me via photos. These guys are fantastic. They explained everything to me and what was occurring for my issues. Very helpful. I ended up buying a new basket which also sorts out that broken ring issue and a new plate kit from them. I ordered this all on Wednesday and it all came in the mail today - Friday! Very fast service. I highly recommend them if anyone is interest and get in contact with them if you need any help. Thanks again guys. Cheers. now to swap it all over...I maybe back on here with questions when I fail! 😆😆😆
