So given the conclusions reached on what makes an "R" an "R"...is the bike pictured in this thread a 2001 "R"?

1) It doesn't have Ohlins suspension...2001 models do.
2) There is no plate (that I can see from these pictures) on the upper triple clamp indicating the production number.
3) The fairings have the "R" moniker shown...these fairings didn't appear until the 2002 model...the 2001 model had the plain ole' 748 fairings...only the tail had the "R" moniker (as seen on this bike).

It would be interesting to see the VIN.

Very odd bike.

1) Correct. 2001-2002 Had Ohlins front and back.
2) Not sure any or which came with plates. My 2000 had no plate.
3) Plain ol' 748 is correct for all that I'm aware of, 2000-2002. 2002 did have the newer model fairing, but still, no R, as seen on this bike.

2001 and later had a carbon fiber airbox and 4-pad calipers, too.

Well, from my understanding R's have the following VIN sequence...

ZDM3H74R

Where...

1: region code (z is italy)
2-3: manufacture id (DM is ducati)
4: 1 = street, 3 = race
5: H = homologation, L = supersport, S = superbike, R = monster, T = sporttouring
6: street version A, B, C or race 7, 9
7-8: engine code

The VIN pictured matches a 748S

Using the link provided, it indicates an "S" as well...the key characters being the "SB" for the fifth and sixth characters. Also, and as indicated by super dooper...the VIN shows a "Y" for the tenth character which indicates the bike is a 2000 model year...not 2001.

Well crap, I'm confused as heck. The guy I bought it from sold it as an "R" and even all the books I received and stuff from when the bike was original lists it as an "R". It has the shower injectors, bigger airbox, and even the original chip in the bike was a Ducati EPROM 748RS (shower injector) chip from UltiMap.

I can't imagine someone would put all R parts on an S Vin'd frame?

According to Shazam's vin decoder, this is a off-road Superbike, meaning it wasn't licensed for street use, meaning it's a 748R...2000 model. Someone probably added CF airbox to it. Pull the airbox and see if it has any manufacturer names on it.

croc-man, i really like your style. you take no prisoners...:)

as far as i've read, the american 748r's of 2001 and 2002 got the öhlins steering damper. us europeans had to suffice with the ol' bicycle pump.

i've owned a 2000 748r a few years ago and now also a 2001 748r, as i couldn't stay away anymore.

the 2000 yr model had no number plate on the steering head. the 2001 and 2002 yr models do. as goes with the öhlins front and back, 4 pot calipers and carbon fiber airbox.

i seem to remember the 2001 yr model also had another frame up-date, but can't remember where i got that from. ??? or was that just the airbox making the whole frame stiffer?

i had my 2000 yr model on a reference dyno bench, and she put out just a sneeze less than 100 bhp on the rear wheel with an open (supplied by the factory) exhaust and the factory-adjusted chip (which would suggest something like 110 bhp in the engine).

My 2001 748R, which I bought new, has the regular steering dampner(NOT Ohlins), carbon airbox, Ohlins suspension front & rear and a number plate on the upper triple clamp. The only place on the bodywork that "748R" appears is a tiny little script at the bottom of the number plate on the tail section, it has no R on the front fairings. I suspect that the OP's bike is a 2000 748R, as Jimmy said.
