The 2 upper piston rings for my 2001 m600 do not look like the ones on Haynes or workshop manual. They look identical (square) on the face that meets cylinder wall , but on the piston side there is a "step" on the other ring. Does anyone have any clue which one of these goes on top?

dunno. guessing - the top ring can sometimes use a step to allow combustion gas to get behind the ring and help force it out against the bore. step to the top.

Belter is right, chamfer to top so compression forces ring against cylinder wall. There should be a small dot or a T indicating top. Normally this is on the 2nd comp ring.
