I haven't used my Hyper in a long time. For nearly a year it's been sitting there without anything happening to it. Forgot to hook it up to a battery tender so when I came back the battery was dead. I tried charging it initially but flipped the poles when connecting the charger (dumb). It sparked for a brief moment, but the ignition was off so I don't think I shorted the ECU.

Tried it with the battery charger connected to the bike and it gives me CAN error 5.2 Battery and CAN error 38. I don't hear the fuel pump running, the fuses are all still intact and swapping the ECU out for my 2 other stock ECUs (there's a DP ECU in there right now) does the same.

Is it just a battery issue that I need to fix or is there more going on because I swapped the poles? I do remember that shorting the battery and turning on the ignition can mess something up in the ECU rendering it kind of useless, but all my ECU's give the same error codes.

Also, when turning on the ignition the start-up message is just a bunch of stars instead of the normal text (forgot what it was, something with "race" I think).

5.2 is bad battery voltage These bikes do all kinds of strange things
when the battery is bad a garbled display is common when the
battery goes 38 is CAN communication line error. I would start with
a good battery. What happens on the ECU is the ground for
it gets fried you can use a wire to ground it directly most common
cause is people reverse the polarity on the diagnostic cables.
Just do a search there are many threads that cover it but I
would start with a good charged battery 1st.

@Drinky out and about. How the hell do you leave a 1100 Hypermotard sit for this long??

Battery seems to be the culprit. I never got the CAN BUS error but I had a bit of a false start to where the bike would turn but then would die and the CEL and Fuel lights would blink for a few. Sort of how a car will do it but there was no i'll affect.

I would say to check all grounds as suggested above since fuses seem to be intact then get yourself one of those fancy light weight batteries.

Welcome back!

Ah yes, now I remember, the ECU frying was when using the diagnostic tools incorrectly. No such thing here, all ECU's show the same thing. I'll just start with a new battery first.

Well, it started with my exhaust falling off on my last ride and the LV decat mounting point being broken off. Didn't have time to fix it before I left for a new job in a new country. I left my bike in my home country with my parents because it's impossible to ride in my current city and there's a huge risk for it being damaged or stolen. It really sucks, especially since someone at my gym has an 1100S and every time I see it, it makes me want to ride mine. I've checked all grounds and fuses seem to be intact. I'll put in a new battery next time I'm around and try it out.

Good to be back. I recently tried my brother's Pani 899 and that thing was so much fun, but couldn't come close to the Hyper in regards of pure fun factor. Not sure what I'm going to do with the bike next, either sell it or keep it as one of the last Ducati's with a Trellis frame and oldskool 2 valve air cooled engine :grin2:

Ok, so I finally came around fixing the bike up a bit. Seems like the only thing needed was a new battery. It fired right up after having been in storage for 1 year. Runs fine, so damn fine. Belts are a bit old though, 5 years now even though I haven't put many miles on it, might have to replace them soon.

I was initially thinking about fixing her up and selling her, but after a short ride in the cold and wet I came to the conclusion that I can't. This thing gives me one of the biggest smiles in the world. Cranking the throttle in 2nd gear is still one of my most favorite things ever :D

Only first gen owners know whats up! Not saying the newer gens arent spectacular, but there's something about the gen 1 bikes that inspire some serious evil grins. Glad you got it fixed.
