1000ss, changing from a 38 tooth to 42 rear with a 15 front.
I want the shortest length practical to reduce the wheelbase.

I believe the original is 96 links....anyone know how many I'll need for 15/42?

Every additional tooth on the rear sprocket shortens your wheelbase about 4 mm. So going from a 38 to a 42 tooth rear sprocket shortens it 16 mm. A shorter wheelbase will reduce your high speed handling stability. If the present position of your chain adjuster can accommodate this, you can use your 96-link chain.

Using a two link longer chain adds (5/8-in) 16 mm to your wheelbase. So to keep the same wheelbase use 96 + 2 = 98 links

Thanks Strega, new sprockets & chain have been purchased.....what I was trying to do was cut the chain to length at home before visiting the bike. (a few miles away)

96 may be wrong....since read it's 98. I have 107 on the new one at the moment.
