If you overfill the tank, the overfill tube can drain some of the fuel toward the bottom of the fairing. In some cases the charcoal canister can also get fuel in it from over filling, but in those cases you will have some hard starting problems.

I've been getting exactly the same gas smell with my '02 ST4s for over 8 months now! I too can't find a leak anywhere. I get the gas smells whether the tank is full to the brim or half empty! It's not coming from the charcoal cannister either, because I don't have one on my ST (it was removed years ago!).

I've just learned to live with it. I'll be getting a 48,000 mile service in a few weeks so I'll ask the shop to take a closer look at the fuel system. Maybe they can find something wrong somewhere.

One other thing to check is the black rubber gromet on the front of the filler well. When you open the gas cap, there should be a rubber gromet sealing against a very small hole on the cap. Once sealed any gas fumes should go from the cap to the charcoal canister.

If the rubber gromet is not there or is not seating properly it can cause the vapors to escape to the area around the cap where you can smell it.

I understand. My 2002 4s is smelling and making a suction sound at the cap. I removed the cap and completely disassembled it to confirm all vent channels were clear and could find no problems. Next was a raise of the tank and all hoses seemed tight and healthy also no pinches. WTF - it doesn't seem dangerous but it is smelly.
