Well I know some catalytic converters really make a bad smell. So if your bike has a catalytic converter, I would say it is the culprit.

I just measured the forks and yes, they are as you said, so nobody has done anything with them it seems. I will try moving the forks up 5mm in the tclamps this weekend. As for the kind of riding I do, I love mountain roads, I don't like tight corners much tho, as my SS doesn't like to drop...

Define what you mean by 'better' oil? Higher quality? I generally use shell fork oil, though I haven't changed the oil in my ducati's forks yet. Or do you mean different viscosity? I was thinking perhaps trying with 5wt oil would soften/speed the forks up a bit. As for adjusting things...

what do you mean you are running them 5mm shorter? Did you drop the forks down in the triple clamps? How did you lenghten the rear? I noticed the front was harsh the first time I rode it, had to soften it up as much with the clickers as I could, but it is still way too harsh... I suppose...
