However, our bickering is distracting from the point of the thread, and we should stop muddying things up here.

st2lemans Also, don't forget that in Europe, the model year starts on January 1, not in August of the previous year like in the US.

The Monster family continued to attract younger riders and posted an increase of 6% over the first
half of 2000. Sales of the Sport Touring family increased 25% driven by the popularity of the ST4S.

Ducatiís gross margin was 40.1% of net sales in the first six months of 2001 versus 38.3% in the first
half of 2000, while EBITDA rose 14.4% to 43.3 million euro, from 37.9 million euro. EBITDA margin
was 19.6%, versus 17.4% in the same period of the previous year. This is mainly thanks to the
increase in gross margin along with lower subsidiary costs and increased sponsorship revenues.

Net income posted a record high of 13.1 million euro for the first six months of 2001, up 102% from
6.5 million euro in the same period of 2000.


Things were different in northern Europe

marxred749s 02 st4s has a red key! 06 749 has a red key, thank god they stopped that silly practice!

NO RED KEYS on the new stuff!

Consider yourself lucky to have such a rare ST.

And, as I said, I'm not denying that they exist. Like the 2003 ST2, they were made in limited numbers, and full production didn't start until MY2002.

From Ducati's 2001 Q1 Revenue Statement:

“First quarter 2001 numbers were depressed by various factors,” said Carlo Di Biagio,
Ducati Chief Executive Officer. “These include a combination of uncertainty about the
economy in general, harsh weather conditions, particularly in the US and in Europe, and
delayed shipments of our high-demand new models, the Monster S4 and the ST4S, in
certain markets.”
(Which was pretty much everywhere)
“We are stepping up production of the S4 and ST4S to fulfill back-orders. More bikes will
be available in the next few weeks,” added Di Biagio. “As the weather perks up and the
season gets going, we look forward to significant improvements over the next quarter.”

(They never got ahead of the curve until the end of 2001, when MY2002 began and they re-launched the bike, which is why this is a semantic issue)

I had a friend that put a deposit down on an '01 ST4s, only for it to be unfulfilled. He got his bike later, and it was already an '02.

ducati2242 It may of been 2002 before they made it to u.s.a. but there was an MY01 st4s in Europe I bought one in may 2001.

RedST This is semantics, but for the ST4s, the series began with MY02. The MY01 bikes were a limited run and for the press and shakedowns, and not the official (historical) start of the model.

Kind of like the MY03 ST2. They exist, and even have a spot on Ducati's web site, but they didn't claim to produce an ST2 in 2003.

Anyway, the red key debuted on the ST4s and coincided with the release of the 5.9 ECU, even though at the time, the immobilizer was a separate box and not in the ECU itself. This is why the 998 has the newer ECU and not the immobilizer. It was all for the European market and having the immobilizer. It trickled down / across to other models over time when it was integrated into the ECU.

Glad to hear it's gone. But the question now is, what happens if you have to replace your black keys? Does Ducati cut and program a new one for you?

The red key was introduced with the 2002 model year on the ST4 and Monster S4 series of bikes. While you might have bought your ST4s in 2001, it was a 2002 model year bike. The 2001 MY ST4 and Monster S4 did not have the red key.
