FFWD OK, it makes sense now that I've taken it apart. There are non-metallic washers on both the front and back of the heat shield, and there's a metal spacer that goes between the back side washer and the mount on the header that only allows the bolt to be tightened so much. The front spacer on the outside of the heat shield disintegrated and fell out. Guess I'll be buying replacements as well as spares. I wonder how difficult it is to get to the rear heat shield when it's time for those to break apart. I'm afraid to look.

FFWD Spoke too soon - found it on the Hyperstrada forum. Apparently it's common for some spacer to wear out, and I guess the bolt must be bottomed out since I can't tighten it.

821 front header heat shield rattle

The front heat shield started rattling today. Seems like the front mount is loose, but the bolt can't be tightened any more than it already is. Search didn't turn up anything. Will start looking at the parts catalog...
