Weekend fun and issues

Did some awesome riding this weekend with a little bit of drama thrown in.

Saturday rode to a friends place in upstate NY. The weather is amazing right now. Before I left I noticed some oil on the ground. Found that the oil filter had been working its way loose so hand tightened it again. Glad I noticed it, could have been ugly. That's the second time a pre-ride once-over has saved me a walk home or worse.

On the way home Saturday night my lights cut out on 87. There was some sort of misfire/pop... engine died. Started back up immediately but no lights. I pulled into a gas station and changed the "2" fuse which fixed the lights. Great ride home.

Sunday I decided to install some new rear turn signals as the original ones had broken off and were hanging down. All went smooth. Got a wash in the city and bike looks and is running great.

I need to buy some replacement fuses... any suggestions?

Replace with OEM. I know it sounds stupid to pay for the same fuses you can get at a gas station than at the dealer but trust me, i've gone through a handful of cheap fuses and they dont quite work the same.

:)

Thanks Craig,

She was a nice a bike.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the exhaust.

Took a while but I just caught up on this thread!

I'm on a 2012 796 which is my daily driver in the summer and I also take it on long trips. I love my hyper, and don't plan on changing bikes anytime soon!

Awesome!

Long live the air cooled HM! :D

Well I'm due for new rubber on my SP. Are most of you guys sticking with the factory supercorsa sp's? I was even thinking of going to SC1/SC2 combo, as it probably gets ridden about 50/50 track/street nowadays.
What are some other track orientated street tyres have you tried on the hyper?

#196 ·
Running Sportmax Q2's. They're one of the best tires I've ran. The biggest thing for me about them is that I've really never run into a situation where they've been unpredictable and surprised me.

I do not however know how they handle rain as I don't ride in the wet. They also do wear more on the race tire side of things.

It's been awhile since I visited this board I still have my 08 hyper s i bought new in December of 07. I ride my geezer glide more now days but still get my red crazy bi--h out for a good flogging. I will say she has soul and looks and I will never sell her. It's hard to beat a 2 valve open clutch Duc .

The Metzeler M7RR are brilliant on the track. Give you absolute confidence, and even if you overdo it they go slowly and you can still catch the bike again. even scratched my brake lever this way

Go for 2.1/2.2 cold air pressure, don't go further down - the rear will overheat and the front will lose that confident feeling.

Also, they're very good tires for the twisty back roads, even if it's a little cold and humid - much unlike the Pirelli Diabolo Supercorsa.

Have fun,

- Philip

Thanks guys, couple more options there for me to look at.
I was running bridgestone S20's on my gsxr, decent grip but I reckon the life on them was worse than the Supercorsa's.
The supercorsa's seem to feel a bit greasy in warmer conditions on the track, might be simply because they are starting to wear down a bit too.

Hey guys, anyone have a link to an oil-change thread for the gen 1 Hyper? I need to do my first and I need the correct Filter Wrench size, capacity etc.

Also, I suffer from the white muck syndrome with many short trips in cool weather building moisture and making white muck in the oil level-window. I gather a long run before the oil change is in order, any other tricks to get the water out?

For those with the 1100 engine, particularly the Evo engines, when are you checking your valve clearances and when are you changing your belts?

Seems to be varying advice on this ranging from belts at 12,000kms or 2 years old to some stating 24,000kms and 4 years. I'm hearing the same km intervals on valve clearances too.

Interested to hear what others are doing on the above.

For those of you with velocity stacks: what kind of range do you get out of the stock tank?

I'm reconsidering the idea of the HM69 and instead getting stacks, remap and fixing the fuel warning so I can at least take it to reserve. I never meant to use this bike for commuting or touring so I'd be happy if I can reliably get 170km or so between fills. I only go 130km now but that's because of the warning light issue, it's usually still got 4L in the tank.

#213 ·
Somewhere around 120 miles give or take until the light comes on for mine.

I usually make a habit of filling up at the 100 mile mark and at that point it takes 2.6 - 2.8 gallons.

#215 ·
I've run dry once at 129km but that was mostly traffic riding, a lot of idle and low-speed work. In normal running my mileage would be good for 180-200km or so but without a fuel warning I'm not game to test it. Lot of soot at the end of my pipe so maybe even scope to lean it out a bit for a few extra kms.

So you guys are getting comfortably over 180km out of your tanks even with stacks and remap? That's good to know. The HM69 sounds nice but maybe I shouldn't be trying to turn this bike into something that it isn't.

Re. HM air cooled Oil service;
Eliems, you've probably sorted it by now but I didn't worry with a filter wrench - after all you're not keeping the filter after it's removed. I didn't have access to one when I had to do the 796 oil change - just got a big adjustable wrench on it - it's not that tight. Ended up a bit dented but who cares? I've had to jam a screwdriver through one on a truck before to get it off - a bit messier! It's only done up by hand. Oil screen was much tighter to get off - plus you have to drop front pipe - not too difficult. Replacing studs with stainless as one came out with seized nut - mine are very rusted.
Not sure how you get rid of condensation build up in crank other than some long hot rides. :)

This is a great thread just trying to keep it going. Has anybody put the motoletric hi cap battery cables on their 1st gen. hypers. I just received mine and they are impressive to look at to say the least. My hyper's in for the winter so I'll be installing them at a later date.Have always had slow cranking issues mainly when it's below 60 . Above 60 it always starts on the first cycle.

#218 ·
That sounds like a fantastic upgrade.

I haven't heard of anyone doing this specifically to one of our bikes before but I think it's a great idea. Maybe you can post a little DIY write-up with photos when you embark on the project. :)

I just had a service done by a local ducati specialist. It was at 6,000km but been 12 months since the 1,000 service so just had all the fluids replaced throughout the bike. He said wait till 12k to do the belts so ill be doing it then.
Also a fresh set of supercorsa's thrown on, still loving this bike!

#222 ·
Just gorgeous!! I love it. Words cannot describe. :)

Your example is why I love these bikes so much. Mine will never, under any circumstances, leave the stable.

(HiCAP) Yep - done mine as well. Normally starts in about half a turn....worth the money - also got some for my RSV4 as well. Just to big up the 1100 thread a little. I was chatting with one of the lads on the uk forum who had an 1100s, got rid of it and happened to be out riding with someone who owns an 821sp and another lad who was on a dorso 750. He said they were both comparable and felt that he had to "ring the neck of the 821 to get it to go" then had a go on the dorso and had the same experience. Prior to that he was looking for an 821 but is getting another 1100.

Hard to beat the monstrous torque right off the bottom. Heck, you can be in too high of a gear pulling out of a corner sometimes and the 1100 doesn't even think twice.

With the shear quickness of agility these bikes have to transition back and forth between the corners combined with a motor that has massive torque right off the bat, not much can keep up with them on a tight twisty road.

I like this thread and want to keep it going. I have a 2008 hyper and personally think its the best year . I'm not saying the new one's aren't nice but the old and the new don't even seem like they are remotely the same. I know all models change from year to year. But come on the first year is the one that Pierre Terblanche designed . I'm not even sure if he is involved anymore I mean look at it . Air cooled now water cooled. Different riding modes anti lock brakes. The styling is way different , to me the first gen. hypers are are work of art to look at and an amazing experience to ride. Just my opinion of course .

That's pretty much how all of us 1st gen owners feel. :)

Ducati Performance Enduro Handguards

I am aware that nothing beats the stock handguard-mirror set of the first gen. But some of us still have a problem using the those mirrors and we have opted for several alternatives.

In the short tome I have had the hyper with me, I have tried the DP hypermotard racing handguards (standard acerbis with hypermotard decals on them) and DP mirrors but was a little disapointed with their quality.

I found these that were intended for the multistrada but at least they are Ducati-designed and have Ducati quality standards.
