Access to vertical cylinder

Hey everyone,

I've seen some interesting photos online from those with a 900SS (mine's a '95) for how to get the rear wheel up enough...
to release the pressure on the rear shock...
in order to remove it...
in order to get access to the vertical cylinder covers...
in order to work on valves.

I'm hoping someone can give me some step-by-steps using simple tools so I can do this, also.

I've measured and adjusted the horizontal cylinder easily. Now for the vertical.

I don't have a garage that will support the "hang it from the rear" method, by the way.

I do have a Pit Bull rear stand.

I've seen some build some sort of wooden contraption to put atop a car jack?

1. Lift the rear of the bike with your normal swingarm stand

2. Put a couple of M10 bolts in the bottom rear holes of the engine case. There's two holes that match locations, one is used by the sidestand on the carb'd bikes, the other may be in use by the brake master or floating caliper rod brace, or unused depending on your model.

3. Place a couple of standard jack-stands under the M10 bolts from step 2.

4. Gently remove the rear stand, carefully lowering the bike/M10 bolts onto the jackstands

5. Slide a stack of shop manuals, tire changing wedge (or whatever) under the rear tire to support it while you undo the rear shock bolts

I did this by removing the swingarm plugs and putting a length of 3/4 inch rebar through the passage. lifted the bike and put the rebar on jack stands.

I also put an adjustable rod with heim joints on each end to replace the shock so that I could wheel the bike around. In my case I was removing the shock to have it rebuilt.

there is a couple of holes in the engine cases at the bottom rear you can get a stand to go though there, which is great for carby ss. an example - this company no longer exists afaik

otherwise, through the swingarm pivot is also good. i have a stand for that, which is adjustable and also goes into the front engine mount holes to lift the front.

Anderson are still a going concern, new owner, has been a bit slow to get going but i've bought from them recently, still very good quality australian made stands.
