Exhaust Tubing Question

Hey all--

'95 supersport motor, bumped up to 944 size, and installed in an Elefant-

But I need to build a new exhaust pipe for the front cylinder-

(present one has just been dragged over too many rocks, and finally gave up the ghost after bottoming out after some jumps at the motocross park.... )

But seems that (at least here in US) I can only get pipe in imperial sizes. Closest to 40mm is 1.62" pipe.. so I'll probably go with that- but was wondering about gauge- options are 14, 16 or 18.

Any suggestions on what gauge I should use?

The thin stuff will be easier to work with.

Since youíre using the bike in the dirt, you might consider just replacing the smashed up section with flex pipe that can be easily replaced when it gets damaged, because it will get damaged.

Sorry can't help on exhaust question but do you have any video of your Cagiva bruiser on the track? Bet that attracts lots of attention!

I built one with 44.5mm x 1.6mm and use 2", 2.5" and 3" clr tubes. You can go smaller but if you use that size tube you will get an awesome result especially if you can get it the same length for both cylinders. I used the Ice engineering tube simulator and managed to get it to fit perfectly. I am actually on the look out for a
bike at the moment to do the same thing with.

1.6mm (donít know what gauge that is) pie cuts. Readily available and you donít have to fuck around trying to cut bends. As long as you are a reasonable TIG welder.

There are companies that will supply bends already cut to the angle that you want in regular angles which cuts down on the amount of welding that you have to do and saves time and money in the process. If you are going to make a stainless pipe remember to purge weld the pipe so there is no carburizing of the back side of the weld - guaranteed to crack if you don't. Pie cuts are another option but you will end up doing a lot of welding. Steel pipes you can just weld without a purge.
I do all my exhaust systems out of 1mm Inconel 624 for the first 12 inches on most bikes and then make the rest from 1.2mm titanium or 321 stainless. I don't use any piecuts, all radius bends rather than mandrel bends as they are more accurately round gives a far better product at the end of the day. I do the odd steel pipe, garnet blast and then ceramic coat them inside and out they work just as good and are generally a 1/3 the cost..

Combi-- that's exactly what I planned to do--- Just buy several different bends, then cut them up, align them how I need them and get a buddy to weld it up.... And yeah, ceramic coating for the win.

I have no idea what "carburizing" is... so perhaps I'll go the regular steel with ceramic coating versus stainless..

And yeah, xracer, piecuts would be cool.. but too time consuming..

And also- the stock bash plate is a joke on those bikes- I've actually got a really nice from another bike that getting fitted once the exhaust is sorted....

Racer117: none of the airs were too big.. 2-3 feet at most... but yeah, had A LOT of mx people coming up wondering what the hell the bike was---- even in ducati circles, few have any idea what an elefant is.... But it's burly as fuck... and god does it rally offroad.
