Thumbs up 916, 999, or 1098 (not to mention the 748) The true Duc?

Ok, aesthetically speaking now... I know we can discuss the pros and cons of each generation bike from a performance perspective. ( For the record, I have a 916 and a 748 and have spent some time on a 999, I have not ridden the 1098, 848, or 749).

But IMHO the best looking Ducati ever made was and is the 916. As many of you probably felt , myself included, the 999 (749) were absolute abominations when they made their debut, but I have since changed my mind and want to throw this out there.

I think the 999 was ahead of its time in the looks category, Ducati was coming off of the best track bike ever made (not to mention that it was a complete work of art) and we all expected something to top that which simply was not possible. I think they produced the 999 in an attempt to do so, but it just could not be done.

Now Ducati has produced the 1098 which is certainly superior from a performance perspective, however, I think that it is a regression in terms of looks. Unlike the aforementioned Ducs the 1098 could be mistaken for a Japanese bike unlike any other previous generation.

Bottom lineóI think that if Ducati produced the body style of the 1098 immediately after the 916 (996 998) we would have complained that they looked like a Honda and would have hated it and would have welcomed the 999 style after that as a true Ducati design. I donít have either, but am interested in what everyone else thinks

The subject you have chosen is more popular than the legendary oil thread, more persistant than the clutch cover beauty contest, and even more popular than the ever compelling question of should a Duc rider wave to a Harley rider.

Suggestion....do a search. There is a good thousand pages of commentary on this subject, just do the search under "I am offended because...." That'll get ya some attention !

no one will ever peel my 999R away from me, and that's after having traded in my 1098 in for one.

the 916 is still one of the great designs if not the greatest that Ducati has ever implemented. i personally it. a 916 next to my 999R and 900ss sp would be almost perfect.

My 916 is the culmination of childhood dreams. However, if there was an 851 next to it in the garage I'd be hard pressed to decided which one to love more...

This topic has been beaten to death. There's even a sticky for it.

We all know there are many in the bike world (even lotsa guys who ride Japanese) who think the 916 is the best looking bike (let alone Duc) ever made and that current designs are still ripping it off.

We all know there's a diehard clique who wouldn't have anything other than a 999

We all know some guys (ie the 999 guys) think the 1098 looks like a jap bike.



Lets face it, even though we're all adults, I think most of us aren't any different than little kids who love their toys. When was the last time you saw a little boy concede that his toys weren't the best?

I think we should just leave this topic alone cause it's not gonna go anywhere.

No one has mentioned that if you take the bodywork off, the same basic design has been tweaked since the first 916 (and some could argue, the 851.) It's remarkable to have so much success over such a long period of time (going on 20 years) with the same design.

It's like asking what the best generation of 911 is.

I fell in love with 748 when guy that i used to ride with bought one in 1998.
I was poor college kid then, all I could afford was CBR F2.

But that feeling for Ducati stuck ever since. Kept telling myself I'll get one someday.

I've ridden few bikes since then(R6, 900RR, GSXR1000), and no matter how fast/advanced/cool looking they are, once the new model comeout, old one becomes just absolete.

Somehow, thats not the case with Ducati. 748/916 is now 15y/o design,
Yet, to this day, 748/916 still look as sexy as first time I ever saw one back in 98.
Just like old Ferrari are just as cool as newest one.

Old Japanese car is, well, just an old car.

Lusting after Ducati for 10years, and I finally got one after all this time, and it put biggest smile on my face everytime I hit that start button.


1098 - While faster/better in every aspect, they become more like Japanese bikes(eventho inside, its Italian all the way) looks wise. It somehow does not excites me as much as 748/916 does
